This might be billed as a kids book, but I honestly have not read much that compares on it's depictions of love, loss, grief and responsibility. Breathtaking beautiful prose, fully rounded characters (yes, including the house), and LAYER UPON LAYER of conflicting emotions.

Both the kid and I cried several times during our bedtime reads of this. And I'm looking forward to reading it again to myself, and definitely crying again

I loved the story, but I never get on very well with first person narrative, which I think is why I didn’t enjoy this quite as much as I thought I would.

If you don’t mind books written in first person, and fairy tales and Russian folklore sounds like your cup of tea, then I’d thoroughly recommend picking this up.
