DNF - I was like 40% in the book, but I just can’t stand how selfish the main character is.

Maybe one day I will reach to this book and see if I can finish it

This was such a stunning book. I was not expecting to like this adventure as much as I did. I totally enjoyed the vibes and just the whole voyage of the grey area between life and death and finding yourself.
This book is definitely a comfort read for me. It was so realistically magical . It had humor and friendship. It was just a beautifully crafted story and just perfectly done. I’m shook.

My top 3 favorite characters:

3: Benjamin (loved that they went back to him)

2: Jackdaw / Jack

1: The house

Baba yaga is also up there. She deserves better.

We loved an awful lot about this book and it offered wonderful (organic) conversation prompts about death, friendship, anger, showing care, and (chosen) family.
It inspired us to try kvass.
The house's personality is absolutely charming. The house was my favorite character. I want a retelling from the house's perspective.

I kept seeing this one and I had to know what it was about. I was not disappointed. Spoiler: the house does indeed have chicken legs! Marinka had so much depth! Her feeling trapped, wanting to belong and not knowing what she wanted was very relatable. The plot kept me guessing. Great folktale retelling too! Lots to love.

“I rest my hands on the vines holding me and I whisper into the night, with all the stars as my witness, ‘I want my own life, with a chance to choose my own destiny.’”⁣

What a lovely story filled with adventure and searching and questioning and dreaming. There’s terrible sadness and uplifting joy. ⁣

I wasn’t familiar with the Slavic folklore on which this story is based, but the idea of a kindly Guardian who helps the dead cross the threshold and return to the stars is comforting. The house with chicken legs is its own character in the story and it’s full of charm and warmth. ⁣

Twelve year old Marinka has to go through a lot to find her happiness, but her journey is entertaining and endearing. ⁣

This was a great addition to my Middle Grade March reads.
