Beautiful book. Not just an adventure about a girl in training under Baba Yaga, but a lovely story about growing up. It's heartbreaking at times; it's also profoundly gentle and encouraging. Marinka fights against expectations that she never signed up for, but the novel refuses to portray the struggle in binary terms of one right answer and one wrong answer. Instead, it has the grace to allow Marinka to figure out her place and her purpose while also considering the needs of others.

Overall decent, especially for the age group it is intended for, but not a favorite middle grade read for me. Loved the Yagas, the lore of Yagas, and the places that were included. Marinka was a decent main character as well albeit a little frustrating at times

Ive read a lot of books that are retelling/reimagining of the Baba Yaga myth and this one has been my favorite on that front so far. Perhaps not the most accurate or most Russian, but I loved the way they explained the classic Baba Yaga parts. The plot was, unfortunately, what pulled the book down a bit, feeling a bit too repetitive and a bit too linear but certainly not unenjoyable.
