This has been my favorite movie for a long time. Someday I'll get around to reading the book! (Usually I do this in reverse order, but this is my exception...)
First- This is not a book I would have selected for myself. I read it for a book club.
Second- There were several moments where I found myself frustrated by the amount of characters and names used for each character. I certainly don't want to use that as a reason not to recommend it. Or as an excuse not to reread it someday in the future. However, at this stage in my life with children constantly interrupting me I found myself a little annoyed at points just hoping to get to the end!!
Third- Yesterday I got to the end! I have to admit as I got closer to the end and it was focused on just a few characters again I found myself enjoying what I was reading. There were a few parts throughout the book that I found very exciting and I couldn't put it down.
Overall, I would say give it a try. In this day and age when you have the option I would say go with the abridged version, but that is just my opinion :)

Great read! I am trying to work through all the books I have, and get rid of ones I don’t like. This is a keeper! I love the drama and revenge
Guys and Gals this is an amazing intricate story. Its clever and cunning theres a reason its a classic ;)
This was ok, but I think it was certainly too long for its own good, and this was an abridged version. The story centers on The title character, who at his birth is a poor sailor. He is unjustly imprisoned just before being married, and eventually manages to escape and turn himself into a fabulously wealthy man. The main action of the book involves him both taking revenge on the men who ruined his life and also randomly helping and hurting other people he comes into contact with. For me he became a more and more difficult character to like, as his egotism took over and he started playing God. It was also a bit difficult to keep track of all of the characters, and there's an entire family that we see quite a lot of and has its own very complicated plot going on (mostly not involving the Count) that I sort of wish it had been simplified. The melodrama also started to get to me by the end. If this has been on your list of books to read you might pick it up, but given the length I don't think I can recommend it otherwise.
There are so many intricate twists and turns in this book that it's amazing! I was constantly stunned by the Count of Monte Cristo's thoroughness in his revenge and the intricate pains he takes to do it craftily. It's so complex that at times I wish I had written down the characters and a brief profile so I could keep them straight--I got confused a few times just because I couldn't remember who someone was.
I have loved the movie of this book and was surprised to find that they are quite different. I like them as two separate entities; if you go into the book thinking you already know the story, you're in for a surprise. Something that struck me in the book is that I have more pity for the ones he takes revenge on (compared to watching the movie) and my feelings toward the Count are sort of a love/hate kind of thing. At times I think he's awful, but at times I think he's justified. It's an interesting read with things to contemplate as you go along.

I'm a huge fan of Alexandre Dumas, especially The Count of Monte Cristo. His tiny snippets of humor interspersed in glorious tales of revenge and violence, laced heavily with flamboyant displays of morality and judgment, make a larger than life novel than entertains me each and every time I read it. Poison, stabbings, betrayals, veiled lesbianism, callous men doing wicked deeds, false women dressed in fabulous clothing- the story is deliciously scandalous and I loved rereading it.
(Make sure you get the translation by Lowell Bair. He's the best French translator in my opinion.)

This is the ultimate long-range revenge fantasy wherein the bad people ultimately bring themselves down through their own vices and crimes. Very twisty and politically complicated. (I can understand why the 2002 movie adaptation made the cuts/changes they did, for sure.) The poison plot is especially complicated. But can I just say, Edmond is such a dummy - sure, let's TOTALLY stop off on Elba and do a package exchange and be the Patsy in a treason plot, omg who is that naive??? *facepalm*
I have always been a fan on the 2002 movie adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo and I really loved it. It was because of watching the movie several times that made me pick up the novel to know the story more in detail. But surprise, surprise was I shocked to learn how different the novel was to the movie!!!!
Nevertheless, I enjoyed Edmond's revenge plot and how he worked towards it. It was obvious to the reader that everyone was entangled in one way or another and they would meet their eventual end with the count's maneuvering.
On the other hand, I wasn't a fan on how the story dragged on reuniting Maximilien and Valentine. I mean, the count could have just told him that she was alive several chapters ago but not. Setting that aside, reading this felt like I was reading Les Miserables because of the familiar religion element to it, which was fine by me.
I also enjoyed how it came full circle by Edmond visiting Marseilles, chateau d'if and finally in the isle of Monte Cristo--places that holds relevant experiences to him.
