I was NAMED after a character from this novel, and I still don't think it's all that great.
Oh! It's as classic as you can desire any story to be. The story of the biblical fall and rise of Edmond Dantes, the vengeance simmered over years, culminating in the carefully planned revenge makes the plot enduring. I can imagine why this book is still so popular after almost two centuries since it was originally published.
While some ideas in the book might seem dated to present-day readers, the underlying emotions and intent are only too universal to be forgotten and resonate with the modern readers too.

It’s a slow and long build up to a fantastic ending. Worth reading to the end.
I will preface I didn't know that this was the abridged work when I got it, but I'm glad it was. At 427 pages Dumas epitomous vengeance novel is a fascinating read, but a lot to digest with its use of translation to a way of speaking that was common in the 19th century. But you get used to it quickly, and I truly enjoyed the character development of Edmond Dantes and all those around him as he plays the longest con in the history of man, spanning multiple decades after being falsely imprisoned. I would certainly recommend even the abridged edition,l. For reference the original manuscript is well over 1000 pages, which could have been a lot to bite off.
Have you ever heard music?
True music? That brought tears to your eyes- a flawless, heartrending song that's epic beauty is renowned for all ages and eternity- that bewitches its listeners and those who play it, who can barely understand its magnificence themselves- that you believed, fully and unflinchingly, nothing could match- that nothing could be worthy of its beauty?
The Count of Monte Cristo is worthy.
Flawless writing. Characters deeper than oceans. A plot more beautiful and twisty than the streets of Paris. Prison breaks. Treasure. Disguises. Murder. Revenge. The divine result of weaving mystery, romance, and adventure. Need I say more?
"In grief, as well as in life, there is always something to look forward to beyond."
"All human wisdom is summed up in these two words: Wait and hope."

I’m disappointed that the Barnes and Noble classics series would include an abridged version of this story! I was looking forward to a reread of the whole thing!
Regardless, this is still an interesting book that explores a lot of big ideas. Why do bad things happen to good people? When, how, and why is vengeance justified? What makes people good or bad? How much is too much vengeance?
I don’t like Edmond. I think he’s a terrible person. Maybe it’s the fault of the abridgment (probably), but I didn’t see much in him to redeem him. There’s a difference, I think, between people who are driven to extreme action by uncontrollable circumstances and people who actively embrace and enjoy a life of excessive revenge.
Also, what’s up with Haydee? That’s just...really strange.
I want to reread the full version now!

Beautifully told story of revenge at its finest. Edmond Dantes went from despair to bettering his life by taking out all those who had harmed him.
