600-an halaman selesai juga saya baca.

-Maximilien Morrel

I first read this book when I was in 8th standard. I absolutely loved the children's version and had no idea at that time that there is another version of the book. Until I saw the copy in a glass shelf under the Classics section at a bookstore few years back.

The memories of Dante's story of innocence and revenge rushed back. I bought the book and read it 3 times(two times in a row). A count of Monte Cristo is a historical fiction set in the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. The book is about a successful and happy sailor falling prey to the cruelties of betrayal and jealousy. One moment he has everything he ever wanted and then everything is snatched away. His love, his job and his life.

He is sent to a prison for a crime he didn't commit. A prison where death is the only air one can breathe. Pain, hopelessness and insanity became his friends.

After years of imprisonment, he finally gets a chance to survive. To break the shackles and take revenge. Will he? Well, no spoilers from me!

3.5 a good story with a good pay off

I loved it. If this was a new book, it would be a trilogy. What a great story. I read it in English this time but would like to go back and read it in French.

I had no idea until I was almost done that I actually read the abridged version instead of the unabridged. Perhaps one day I will go back and read the unabridged.

I had mostly mixed feelings about the whole thing.

Spoilers:

On one hand, it was so satisfying to see Fernand/ Monsieur de Morcerf lose everything. But I felt bad for Albert and Mercedes. She’s supposed to be this “faithless woman” who married another man only 1.5 years after losing Edmund, but I saw her as a victim. And Albert really was collateral damage.

Monsieur de Villefort losing his family was ultimately sad. His son Edward’s death was again, collateral damage. I couldn’t enjoy de Villefort’s downfall because of all this death! Good thing Valentine ended up surviving.

I feel like Danglars got off almost easy by comparison. This man lost his entire fortune and had the scandal of his daughter’s broken engagement. Unclear what the purpose of Cavalcanti was to the plot.

Maybe it’s my delicate heart, but even though this story seems to be about waiting and hoping for God’s justice, it also seems to say that revenge is a terrible thing to behold.

The story ends with a hint of happiness for the Count in his future with Haydee. Is this supposed to be a daughter/ father relationship? I hope so.
