I think there were scenes that could have been expanded. Which is why I gave it 4 stars, but all in all good read.

This book is relatively well written with a seriously mature relationship between the lead characters. The romance isn’t annoying. It’s nothing like most contemporary romance fiction where two characters find each other attractive the instant they set eyes on each other.
Here we have two people different in their appearances, races and culture but surprisingly similar in lot of other ways. They find each other ugly but set off on the right foot. They build their relationship from comradeship to friendship to love. And it’s a long gradual process.
I however, wasn’t a fan of the plot. There was a lot of world building and Grace Draven does a very good job of building magic systems and back stories. This was however not as interesting as her other book I read-[b:Entreat Me|18811222|Entreat Me|Grace Draven|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1384700749l/18811222._SY75_.jpg|26746176].
I quite don’t like the feel in her book. They set up a dark atmosphere and make me be on the edge of my seat the whole time even when there is nothing happening.
I think this particular book spent a lot of time in building the relationship but just thought of plot and action at the very end.
Also, what the hell was that epilogue? I expected something more evil from the Queen Mother. I mean what she did will have consequences in the sequel but it is hard to imagine that she just “exited” like that.
But I can’t say I don’t enjoy her books. They have a different kind of feel to them and sometimes I do need to read that. Once a year? I don’t know. But I am not stopping reading this author.
I’ll read the sequels because I want to read Anhuset and Serovek’s story in the third book. But will I do that now? God, no. I don’t want to feel more cold in these winters.

Not much plot and spotty world building but the friends to lovers trope was highly worth it. A thoroughly enjoyable romantasy couple.
3.75–Am I…changing my mind about friends to lovers?? I really liked this world and the characters, could’ve used some more buildup though. Absolutely will be reading the next book.
Brishen and Ildiko's love takes my breath away. This is possibly the most romantic book I've ever read.
