I liked the relationship between Ildiko and Brishen, and how it developed over time.
Didn't like the plot as much - especially the last 20% I found arduous to get through and the description and aftermath ofBrishen's torture were a bit too excessive for me.
Also I don't think I understand the motives of the main antagonist at all - though perhaps that was intended. Still, it felt frustrating.
Also the sex scenes were a bit too much for my tastes - those two really started to be incredibly horny for each other at some point and I have no clue why. That was... weird.
Still, especially the first ~50% were rather wholesome. It's rare to see a main couple in a romance novel actually communicate with each other, which was refreshing to see.

I found this book very enjoyable. It features a romance built on friendship and goodwill rather than the (IMO overdone) instant lust/fated mate trope. There is no unnecessary drama, just pure respect & romance, and you can feel the characters falling into friendship first and then into love. Additionally, worldbuilding is quick, simple, and easy to understand. Some of the banter between the main characters is pretty funny, and the writing did a good job showing us how they tried to see one another not as the "other" species but just as another living being. I will read the whole series.

Wow! What a surprised! Love this book, there is no unnecessary drama, just pure romance, and you can fill the character falling in friendship, in love. Well done. The H thinks the h is hideous, and she thinks the same. I love how the author describe how the H see eyes like an alien object in the face if you think eyes are too weird. I will check other books from this author.
a cute, quick book, i'll tell you what.
✨ the plot ✨
now. i wasn't particularly feeling like getting neck-deep into some complex fantasy world but this book was perfect. the worldbuilding is quick, simple and easy to understand. i loved the constant back and forth between the main couple as they tried to see their partner not as the "other" species, but just as another living being.
✨ the characters✨
likeable. and this is not something all fantasy books can say for their characters. the entire book was so short but meaningful in its connections. better than any 500+ book with 39 side characters LMAO
✨ the relationships✨
i never thought myself to like a friends-to-married-couples-to-lovers trope but here we are? the guy is sweet, NOT ICKY TO READ IN HIS POV EXCUSE YOU *insert any other book with a guy's pov* and the girlie is so

Re-read June 2021. This book is so good. It helped knowing that I was heading for a cliffhanger in the epilogue. I love the exploration of death rites as a way for Ildiko to be part of the Kai culture.
3.5 stars. I liked the characters and the world-building but the pacing could have used some smoothing out. And then the epilogue totally blindsided me! That's not an epilogue, that is the first chapter of the next book. This book felt like the exposition for a series, for sure.
CW for torture.

I feel like this book is part of a series, so there was almost no world building, yet it has the potential to be good. However it's a short, easy and light read, I was not expecting anything so not disappointed. The developing relationship between the two main characters is what makes the books. I absolutely loved their banter and maturity. There was almost no other plot though lol.
It was not a bad read, but it could've been much more and didn't wow me.
Book 2, which I'm currently reading is more action/plot focused so far.
