This was a sweet, closed door romance. Loved the anxiety word vomit from the FMC, very relatable.

This is the second book I've read by Sophie Kinsella. The first book that I've read by her was I've Got Your Number and when I finished it, I told myself never to read by this author in public. But I forgot. I read this book in a students' lounge at my college and I had this stupid grin on my face the entire time. I bet all the other students thought I was crazy - or that I was reading something naughty, which is probably worse. She just has a way of making the worst case scenarios come to live in the most hilarious ways possible. What I really love about her books is that she doesn't use the "perfect" woman, but the ordinary woman who solves problems in her life the way a normal woman would. In this particular book, Kinsella discusses how people always have secrets, maybe not very big ones that could shatter the economy, but small ones like the fact that G-strings make Emma uncomfortable or that she steals her roommate's fancy clothes and passes them on as her own. But the fact remains that people will always have something they're keeping from, maybe because they're embarrassed or because they don't want to hurt you, and it's really up to us to figure out if we can look past that. Having a secret also entails trusting others. If you've shared a secret with someone, it's a sign of trust. You trust the other person not to go blab it to someone else (or say it on national television). Secrets were what caused all the mayhem in this book! Although I have to give credit where credit is due, and it is certainly due to some of the funniest supporting character's I've ever met (*cough*Jemima*cough*).
However, I'm completely unsatisfied with the ending. I feel like Kinsella really rushed it and it didn't feel like it was over. I felt like there was supposed to be another chapter or something because it was just anti-climatic. It's as if Kinsella was like "Oh let's have the boy break up the relationship once too but I wanna finish off this book so let's get them together again after 2 hours. The end." It was a good light read, but I was expecting more after reading I've Got Your Number, especially from the ending, which is really the only reason the book is 4 instead of 5 stars.

The second half of this book was really well done. Characters were explored, inner monologues were relateable, and genuinely had me laughing out loud. I wish the end would have been more developed, and the first half could have been a faster burn, but cute story overall.
Still a bit embarrassed to be reading chick lit on the bus. Does it make it slightly better that this is British chick lit?
Also, why do all the covers of chick lit have to be the same set of colours? If the library decided to shelve together, the section would stick out from a mile away - all girlie colours like lilac, baby blue, and pink...
Anyway, I enjoyed this book. A good choice for a first venture into the chick lit genre.

I am taking a break from reading books on physics and the universe and my brain needed to shrink down to a pea size and enjoy being there for a while. After reading My Not So Perfect Life by Kinsella, I was hooked on her. This woman is the ultimate story-teller of hilarious, awkward, uncomfortable to characters but funny to readers stories. She creates incredibly real characters, even if they are superficial in some ways, they are genuine and likable and very fun to read about. It's interesting that I did see a lot of similarities in the plot to My Not So Perfect Life between Emma in this book and Katie in the other, but alas, it was great.
[Hey, I may have some spoilers. I dunno. If you're super sensitive, skip!]
The story is a light-hearted plot around the life of twenty-something Emma who works for a giant company and is so incredibly clueless about her career and she's off to some accidental big meeting in Scotland. On the way home, Emma is upgraded and sits next to Jack Harper, and during turbulence, when she thinks they're going to crash and die, she spills her worst and most private secrets to Jack. Well, things take a very funny turn when it turns out that Jack works for the same company at a rather, um, important position. You know, I have to say, the love story between Jack and Emma is so fake, almost too silly to be anything more than an office romance. But you're not reading this book for the greatest romance of your life. You'd be reading it for a good laugh. Sophie Kinsella is HILARIOUS, that is the one word I would use to describe her writing, her characters, their self-talk and the dialogues and the monologs in their heads. So Very Funny! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read more of her stuff over time.

My most disappointing of Kinsella's books. Admittedly, I do not think I'm the target audience for her books to begin with. A bit too much sexual innuendo & absurd charades & twists & turns in relationships. Emma the main character is riduclous and awkward in her secret keeping about what she deems most embarrassing, and yet her life is thrown for a loop for a whirlwind of embarrassments. It reads quickly though & almost like a chick-flick movie.
I feel like I ruined this book for me by watching the movie adaptation- which was, frankly, BAD.
This is a funny, comedic, humorous book with goofy characters, but for some reasons, I couldn't understand Jack- I felt like he got away being a j*rk. This feeling towards Jack made the happily-ever-after ending not-so-happy for me and I kept it unfinished for weeks/months (cause I already knew the ending watching the movie). Again, I don't know what my reaction would be if I hadn't seen the movie- I was so excited reading the book that halfway through it I searched for the movie and had started watching it (and then got disappointed). Anyway, liked this book- amazing if you want to have a good time!
