I am not a fan of novellas. I like to get completely lost in a novel. And novellas prevent that type of enchantment. I couldn't fall in love with any of the characters. But it was Hot! And beautifully written minus one sentence that almost ruined the entire book for me.

I’m not usually fond of novellas. More often than not, the character development is flat and the plot is rushed. I found Beg to be a pleasant exception.

The story centers around Monica, a gifted singer struggling to find success in Los Angeles. She’s a member of a band that includes her former high school sweetheart, Darren, and her suicidal best friend, Gabby. To make ends meet, Monica waits tables at a rooftop bar of a swanky new hotel owned by Jonathan. When she accidentally spills a drink on Jonathan and his guests, her obnoxious boss fires her on the spot. Jonathan helps her land a new job at his friend’s hotel and the two begin a flirtation. After losing a bet to Jonathan, Monica agrees to go home with him and obey his every command for one night “until the sun comes up”.

In some ways Beg seems like the latest in a long line of billionaire playboy tropes. However, there’s something refreshing about Jonathan. He doesn’t suffer from a secret, tragic past. He’s not moody, abrasive or dysfunctional. Aside from having a ton of money, he’s just a normal man – a man who is doing his best to pick up the pieces of his heart that was shattered when his wife left him. The fact that Jonathan was devastated by his divorce proves that he’s a man with a huge capacity to love and that alone had me invested in his story.

All the characters are well thought out and I’m sure the author hasn’t begun to scratch the surface of who they are. The plot is perfectly paced and the end left me wanting more. This is a promising start to what I hope will be an interesting series.

This book grabbed me in the first sentence... I mean, who wouldn't get hooked on something that starts out saying "I am not submissive."
This short novel is comprised into 3 different parts and Beg is the first one.
I really enjoyed the story underneath all the sex. The characters seemed very real with real problems.
Monica is a struggling artist trying to make it in the music scene in California. She is a waitress by day and a singer at night.
During one of her shifts, she accidentally spills her drink order on none other than the owner of the establishment, Jonathan Drazen.
Jonathan is a known man whore who is still in love with his ex-wife.
Sucked in by his looks, scent and sheer magnetism, Monica and Jonathan start something with no strings--she knows exactly where he stands and she is okay with that.

2.5 – 3 totally detached stars.

BEG is nothing new under the sun. The main character is this gorgeous poor musician who just happens to literally bump into her gorgeous rich boss, after which the main point of the plot naturally shifts from the heroine's friends, their relationships, problems, and careers as musicians to the hero and heroine having the best sex of their lives - yes, after "knowing" each other for all of one night.
SpoilerUntil The Bitchy Ex-wife enters the picture. Sigh.

But honestly, I didn't flick the book open expecting anything mind-blowing in the first place, so there's that.

This doesn't mean rhat I'm not slightly confused, though. Why does every heroine ever, no matter how mature and independent they supposedly are, need to forget about their priorities and responsibilities pretty much as soon as the hero grants them the light of their attention?

Also, the writing in this one WAS kind of weird (just look at the blurp. Or the first page.) and caused a distanced feel to the story, so reading it was a bit like visiting someone else's daydream- not very steamy, but in my opinion, curious all the same.

So it was easy to forget that the book is marketed as erotica. This might not be much of a compliment, but I mostly enjoyed just the characters and their ordinary lives to begin with, so it's not like I was greatly disappointed.

(No, I'm not making excuses for this at all. Why you asking?)

I guess all in all I kind of liked BEG - it had its problems, especially when it comes to the sex scenes (which are, well, for lack of a better expression, boring) - but I don't feel like it was too bad a snack. Who knows if any of its potential will be used in the future--

- but also... Who cares? I don't regret spending my, errr, §0.00 on it, but probably wouldn't take the risk with any of the sequels.

(edited because i make terrible typos and write with no more clarity than the author. guess it's only natural that i didn't mind the prose that much, then.)

Stupid novellas. I really need to read synopsis. I hate being introduced to a character and then nothing, you have to wait 2 months to see what happens. JUST WRITE A FULL LENGTH NOVEL! I'm sure the ideas are there. Stop wasting my time. I probably won't read the rest of them, as I just don't have time to watch for all of the release dates. That being said, the book was decent. The main character Monica was a bit of a flight bitch though. One second she was like "I don't want anything to do with men, I want to concentrate on my singing" then the next she was like "fuck me harder'. Lady. you can do both, just dont' confuse everyone. On the plus side, I love the cover art!

This book was just ok for me. Kind of same old, same old but I'll be damned if I I'm not dying to see what happens next.

Someone handed this to me at Love n Vegas today (thank you!) so i dove in tonight. Really enjoyed it. Spicy, love an LA setting, and seems like a good set up for angst.

I loved this...couldn't put it down, but it was worth the lack of sleep. My first time reading something by C.D. Reiss. Lots of sexy angst! Looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
