about jess figuring out their gender identity and grappling with the horrific abuse the queer community faces in 1970s new york to modern time. one of the saddest books i’ve ever read. i think this should be a necessary read for anyone. especially in a time where our education and media is being censored especially with the trans and queer community being affected, we need to keep educating and helping future generations learn about this
Graphic: Hate crime, Rape
Many books make you empathize with their characters, but I have encountered few books that cut down to your very core, and make your heart break with each injury and injustice. Stone Butch Blues is one of these books. The main character is Jess, a butch lesbian trying to find identity and a place to belong in the mid-twentieth century. Eventually, time moves forward to the 1970s, and the Gay Civil Rights movement is born. With this political and social reckoning, however, comes narrowly defined roles for gay men and women, and those who fall outside of these starkly drawn boundaries are once again left outside looking in. There are wonderful non-fiction books that detail the Gay Civil Rights movement in the twentieth century, but Stone Butch Blues makes that history become alive.

not sure what to say about this one. on one level it wasn't particularly well written, quite repetitive and generally a bit tricky to get through, especially in the first half
at the same time it offered a sort of comfort i guess, in the reminder that there have always been and will be people like me. also a powerful reminder of how lucky i am to live today, and how far we've both come and have left to go
while it didn't quite have the impact on me i guess i was expecting it to have i fully see it's significance and why it means so much to a lot of people

First literary introduction of the Butch identity and butchfemme community. I adored it but I believe it shouldn't be the recommended as an intro book as its fiction and due to it graphic heavy topics. As others have mentioned the presence of Native American characters and culture is dubious in its use. Overall an interesting and compelling novel, will have to read again and hopefully I will be able to score a physical copy one day!
