I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this series. Knowing I was a fan fiction made me weary. It turns out that it is an extremely well written story and on the same level as the original novels.
While it is not by J.K. Rowling, this was a brilliant piece of literature true to the series wee fell in love with and helped ease some of my Post Potter Syndrome while leaving me wanting more.
It was an opportunity to revisit the Harry Potter universe of my childhood. And seen from that perspective, the book was great. The author stayed true enough to the original material for the effect. Reading this made me nostalgic about those days. Hogwarts, in all its splendor, from the Hogwarts Express to the Sorting in the Great Hall to the corridors, to the grounds and to the Forbidden Forest still guarding its secrets.
Enough nostalgia though, to the actual book. This is my first foray into fanfiction, so here goes. It was a decent book. The author took a lot of liberties with how Hogwarts works and even went so far as to change a few things. Trying to explain magic in terms of science seems bit goofy to me. But other than that, the story works quiet well. It certainly was age appropriate. It captures the essence of the Harry Potter universe quiet well, the original characters were all very close to what I thought they would be. James’ thoughts and struggles seem real enough to someone in his position. World building was already done with, so all the author had to do was develop the characters. He did a decent job of it. Although you get the feeling that he keeps inserting things he is familiar with to make it easier for him to write.

okay.. it took a long time to finish it.. I will give 3 of 5 ratings..
the story is great enough, it can remind me how much I missed this book series..
and old charactera also back..
unfortunately, the character of james potter quite gloomy abd always compare his dad and him. he really annoyed when he is not accepted as gryffindor quidditch player.. I think in the other novels he will stay live in his dad's shadows.. poor james!

A good book that takes you back to Hogwarts. As a great HP fan, I loved going reading this book, almost as good as the original series. Can't wait to read the second book!
Fun, whimsical, and generally a good read in the spirit of the original series.
9/21/12 - I randomly ran across this one on Pinterest. I was excited when I saw it was even free for d/l here at GR. It's a 3 part series about James Potter the younger.
There was a lot that I liked here. There were a few things that left me scratching my head at first, but most of them were explained satisfactorily. I liked seeing a lot of the characters from the past too. Of course, Neville's my favorite and I would have liked to see more of him. More Luna would have been good too, but you can't have everything. :) This IS a series more about James and his friends and not the students from the previous generation. I did like how not everything at Hogwarts was the same and things changed with the times.
I d/l the other two and I'll definitely be reading them.
3/30/15 - This is actually a 5 part series. I think the last one isn't out yet. Just clarifying that my from previous entry. I read this one to my daughter at bedtime over the course of several months. She liked it too. I look forward to reading more with her. I did read #2, but held off on reading any more so we could read them together.

I actually really enjoyed this trip back to Hogwarts. I was worried it wouldn't seem as magical as the original series by JK Rowling, but I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderfully it was done. It's not Harry, Ron, and Hermione's world, but it's a great book about the next generation of Potters.
Loved this book. Stayed true to the series and characters!
