I found this book by chance as I had just downloaded the Goodreads App to my new phone and I was searching ebooks available through it, this came up and since I had loved the original series I knew I had to try this.

This is a book written not by the original author of the Harry Potter series, J K Rowling, but by another author and it is written in a genre call fan fiction. This was new to me but apparently there are a great number of these type if books written. The other thing I learned was that the author of this book does not make any money on this book because the characters are registered to another author, but he still writes them for the fans who want them.

This book follows Harry and Ginny's first born, James in his first year at Hogwarts. James finds his own adventures at Hogwarts even without Voldemort around to cause havoc. James has to deal with his own fears and expectations. He is worried about living up to his fathers expectations although his parents put no pressure on him, he still feels like a failure when he doesn't make the Quidditch team,

This book is well written and a tribute to the original books. It deviates from the original making this more his own but that doesn't bother me. The connection between the characters of the original and this book are wonderful and really make you feel it all goes together. It was such a joy to return to Hogwarts.

Lovely. Best fan fiction I've read! It's quite a talent that Mr. Lippert has to take us into J.K. Rowling's world, keep it all the same yet introduce us to new magic, new worlds, new characters and adventures. My favorite part of this book is the Technomancy class that explains the science behind the magic,(to a degree). What an awesome concept! The story was nice, a bit rough in some areas and some revelations i didn't quite love but still, a very good story and very well done.

Right-wing movements in the wizarding world
Retconned Americans
Some interesting ideas that fizzled a bit at the end
While not Rowling, always great to visit that world

This really started off well, firmly in the world created by Rowling. Unfortunately a quarter of the way through the author changes some fundamental things that we know about life at Hogwarts. I couldn't get past the changes which I felt were inconsistent.

If the author created his own world perhaps I could enjoy his writing, however I found the writing style was just too different to Rowling to feel like anything other than fan fiction.

For me, this was just okay. Yes, it was very cool to read about some of my old friends again, even though, like Mom said, their voices didn't sound completely authentic. And yes, I enjoyed being back at Hogwarts. But I guess I just never felt really attached to James or his friends, and most of the fondness I felt for anyone was just residual fondness from the HP series. I felt like the book got bogged down in the middle with exposition and I thought the biggest problem was that the stakes just weren't high enough for the characters in the book. I didn't feel any real sense of danger or doom. The story really picked up for me towards the end, and I read it very quickly. I think the problem for a book like this is that it can only really be judged in comparison to the originals, which is pretty unfair and impossible. But still, it is kind of fun to see what someone does with something so many people love.

I've actually never read any fan fiction before, I prefer my characters pure from the mind of the author. However I needed something to read and decided to look at the free ebooks available through goodreads. I tried this out and was very pleasantly surprised. It's about Harry Potter's oldest son, James and is really much better than I expected. I didn't feel like it made any crazy leaps or assumptions or changes. Worth a free read for sure.

First and foremost, it is important to remember that this is Fan Fiction. It is well written, well thought out, well plotted, but still fan fiction. Mr Lippert has taken his own ideas of "what comes next" in the world of Harry Potter and put it to paper. He is obviously a writer outside of these stories as they are well crafted, well written, and not full of grammatical errors (one of my biggest pet peeves on fan fiction most of the time).

Mr Lippert is very clear that he owes a great deal to JK Rowling for creating the magical world of Harry Potter and the characters within this world. He has just taken his own idea of what happened next and put them to paper for all share.

This first of 3 stories about Harry and Ginny's son James is interesting, with a solid story line that is in the same feeling of the Harry Potter stories, set in a familiar world of Hogwarts. Mr Lippert tries to stay true to what Ms Rowling has already revealed about the world of Harry Potter.

Mr Lippert makes no bones that this is fan fiction, so he may not stay true to cannon for all those die hard fans, but has set out to write for himself (and others who want to read it) his own ideas. What he does best is when he writes for characters either briefly mentioned in the Harry Potter series or characters he has introduced for his own story telling. James Potter is an interesting character and as this first book went on, he became more of a fleshed out, well rounded character. His friends Ralph and Zane are fun and bring that sense of that Harry, Ron, and Hermione had, without duplicating it exactly. Where this story stumbles a bit is when he is writing for Harry, Ginny, or really any character heavily featured in the Harry Potter series. And this is, I think, for obvious reasons. Ms Rowling knows these characters best, she has their voice so a part of her that to have someone else write for them is never quite the same. That is not to say that Mr Lippert writes these characters poorly, they are just not the same ones we have grown to love (or hate) through Ms Rowling's writing. When he is writing for the characters he has introduced for this story, these are done very well, with a true voice coming through, and developing their own identies as characters.

So, now I am off to read the second of the James Potter stories. Intrigued and becoming more invested in these new characters.

This is a great start to a new series that made me feel that I was reading an extension of the original series. It was nice that the author made a point of keeping true to the series and including original characters. I look forward to the next book!
