First I’d like to thank @adorabol for the ARC. Now when she said slow burn, she meant that. 😭 The love story between Ira and Merit was beautifully written and I love that he never gave up on her and she never gave up on herself. Now the banter was bantering and I could not get enough. For fans of:

Thank you to the author for the ARC!
Let me start by saying that Adorabol Huckleby-Ordaz has become an auto-buy and auto-read author for me!
This was a 5-star read for me from start to finish! I loved how she wrote the black experience - how our culture handles and views grief, how women are often deemed unapproachable, and how we love deeply and protect what's ours. Merit and Ira's love story was beautiful and believable. I enjoyed how it wasn't rushed but was authentic and wholesome. I'm not typically a sports romance girly but this one was great. Basketball wasn't the primary storyline but was a common denominator between both main characters. I thought it would be like Love and Basketball - and I was humbled! This book does what Love and Basketball THOUGHT it was doing! While the former shows toxic masculinity and one-sided love, Ira is THAT GUY! He wholeheartedly loves our girl Merit OUT LOUD and meets her on her level without compromising his wants. The dialogue and character development was *chef's kiss*
Sorry if my review is all over the place but that's just how excited I am about On Merit Alone!

The best sports romance I’ve read in a long time!! I love a prickly FMC that is actually a big softie when you get to know her. Merit’s vulnerability, and journey to trusting Ira with her heart was so lovely to read. 10/10 would recommend! Terms of Inheritance was one of my top reads of 2023, and I think this is in the running for best of 2024 ♥️🏀
Sooo…this was my first sports romance book & I will say I enjoyed it. Merit was a character that it took me a couple of chapters to get into her & figure her out. I understood how she reacted and was so happy to see her growth throughout the story. IRA…that man right there..his patience with her was exquisite although there were times where I was like okay Ira chill lol.. there was a time in the early chapters I got confused with how much time passed but overall I really liked seeing them together.

This book had me deep in my feels as a grandpa's girl. Merit made big, silent tears fall from my face at least 3 separate times (doesnt help i just finished my period lol). This is the second book I've read from this author and both were really good , but very emotional, books. So if your a mood reader looking to be a little sad, this is your author!
As a basketball kid, I loved the ball-talk and Ira was impossible not to love from the get-go. There was no real outside conflict in their relationship; all of the conflict is self-inflicted with unresolved childhood trauma or assumptions. This book played out like real life, there wasn't instant-love and it took a lot of time for Ira to earn Merit's trust and get her to open up.
I do feel like, for as long as this book was, the ending felt rushed. I was hoping for more than 4 minutes of epilogue, if we're being honest. It was still super good, and I'm just going to headcannon the rest of the HEA lol.
