AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
WHAT! AN! ENDING!! I've grown to love this story with my entire heart. Dani's and Dorian's growth from cute, naive kids to capable, hopeful adults was so satisfying; they remind me so much of the Pines Twins from "Gravity Falls" if we were given a glimpse into their lives past summer.
Damien and Nico have proven themselves once again as the best characters. They carry the show through their internal, relatable struggles yet unrelenting, meaningful devotion to their companions(William and Dani). They are lonely characters who unexpectedly found themselves within a family that loves them too much. And how I wish that warmth as Damein and Nico did and eventually achieve.
I initially did not care for Moncia in the first volume. However, over the course of the second and third volumes, she became such a force of goodness, loyalty, and empathy that I cannot imagine the narrative without her. She came into her own and refused to let anyone disturb that. While she did forgo her feelings forDorian for as long as she could, when she did realize how deeply she loved him, she did not abandon her mission to end the ongoing war. Yet she also demonstrated through her small acts of consideration how much she cares about Dorian as a person.
Naturally, as a book for juvenile audiences, it was expected that Mrs. Wytte and the other witches would pay for her crimes non-violently. Do I think it's realistic that every witch was willing to abide by William's promise for a peaceful future? No. But gosh darn it, Dorian did such a fantastic jobturning those pointy hats into different colors, I'm willing to delude myself. Simialry, the evil spirit that was one of Dani's dark influences, other than herself (great twist and usage of her speciality curses, btw), getting killed so quickly was a little sour for my taste, but alas, I recognize this story is more about family and friendship and magic than it is about good vs. evil.
For a modern, juvenile graphic novel based around magic, I highly recommend this story for all types of readers. If you can ignore it's massive size, you'll find yourself along for a riveting and endearing ride. I would say I'm going to miss these characters, but I just followed the author/artist on Instagram, so I'll be seeing Dorian, Dani, and the rest of the "Hooky" gang every now and then!
