I'm glad I picked up this book, but this is a challenging read. You will need some background knowledge of African colonization and religion to fully understand the ideas present here. I am sure I missed quite a bit. But this a radical book that deserves the acclaim that other equally challenging Western philosophical books have gained. The writing is complex, and you have to pay close attention. This is a book waiting to be rediscovered in my opinion.

a challenging read at times, some of the prose reminded me of the philosophical discussions in russian lit that i have really loved (but could only really understand via discussion with others!). probably would have given this five stars if i had read it in a class so i could fully enjoy its meaning, but loved it nonetheless!

There's a lot more philosophy than adventure in the novel. The questions and arguments that are explored are interesting, but there's no attempt to transition cleanly from point to point so the book is disjointed. Thought-provoking, but not a must-read.
