This is my first 5 star for this series. I corrupt and hideaway are ok. But this? Damon? I didn’t expect to love him or this book so much.. Let alone cry at any point in the series but here I am. This was so good and I’m just so happy for Damon and Winter

Six years ago, his little girl and I changed each other, and while I couldn't change her back, I could certainly give her some new memories of me. Now that... I could do.

"Enjoy your freedom while it lasts, Winter Ashby, because we're not done. Grow up, learn things, and have fun in high school, but don't change the little girl who loves it 'in the black,' because I like you there, too. And I will be back for what's mine when you're old enough for bigger things." I turned my face away, breathing harder. "And be good," he told me. "If I hear anyone touched you, I will crack his fucking skull."

I’ve been looking forward to this book for a long time, so imagine my delight when I saw it was over 500 pages. I knew we’d get updates about the others, and I was happy about that, but I wanted Damon’s story most of all. I loved [b:Corrupt|21981841|Corrupt (Devil's Night, #1)|Penelope Douglas|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1398947518s/21981841.jpg|41292505] for the suspense, and I liked [b:Hideaway|29082755|Hideaway (Devil's Night, #2)|Penelope Douglas|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1495731109s/29082755.jpg|49314977] because it dug deeper. That being said, Kill Switch had the emotional depth that Corrupt lacked, because the sizzling connection between Damon and Winter was evident from page one. It wasn’t always a positive connection, but I never doubted it existed. I can definitely see how some people might find the majority of the book slow; it was long and filled with lots of seemingly trivial memories, but I ate it all up. Winter and Damon’s relationship was riddled with drama, and as a result, it was impossible to understand their present without knowing their past. I loved the flashbacks, the new perspective of events I’d thought I understood from the first two books. I also loved having Damon’s POV, because as we started to learn at the end of Hideaway, he’s not the one-dimensional villain the first book made him out to be.

I didn't know if I felt responsible for the fact that she now only had four senses by which to experience the world, but it was a strange feeling to want to protect someone from others when I knew I'd be worse for her health than anyone.

Make no mistake about it: Damon is an antihero, and this story doesn't change that about him. It gave the reasons for why he is the way he is, and why he does what he does, but I didn’t feel like it made excuses or apologies for him. He did what he was accused of doing, as well as lots more. That being said, I believe it was necessary for Damon to be the depraved, selfish, deviant person he was, because then we were able to understand how different he was with and towards Winter over the years. Sure, he’s possessive, vindictive, and sometimes downright mean when it comes to her, but he can also be gentle and attentive. Patient. At peace, for once in his fucked-up life. It also makes his connection with people like Banks and Will that much more noteworthy. Speaking of Will... damn. I knew him and Damon were closer than the others, but I didn’t realize how close. I can’t wait for Will’s book, because he’s really the only enigma left now.

She was mine. In our secluded, secret little world, she was mine. I wanted to watch her dance, and I wanted to steal her away a thousand more times to feel her excitement and fear and live through how vulnerable and sweet she was, but... I wanted to keep her happy, pure, and innocent, too. I didn't want to ruin her.

Winter is a special kind of heroine, at times naive and innocent but also a complicated woman full of dichotomies. She doesn’t see what others see, but then again, she can ignore what doesn’t matter and “see” what others don’t. She’s physically vulnerable but mentally strong. She didn’t stand a chance of beating Damon in a war, so she wasn’t afraid to use the few weapons in her arsenal, one of which was her mind. She knew how to hurt Damon better than anyone, and I liked it because he had irreparably damaged her too. Damon wanted to want to hurt her, but Winter just plain wanted to cause him pain. She wasn’t weak, but she was an isolated girl who craved something real. Damon gave her everything of him, good and bad, and I understand better than anyone how hard that is to move on from. At her core, though, Winter’s most defining characteristic is that she’s the cure to Damon’s disease. After all, their first substantial encounter occurred when she was only eight, and because of it she was forever changed. It’s impossible to extricate her identity from Damon's very existence. I never doubted that she was his, but I did doubt that he hadn’t ruined it. Well, and her, too.

I hated him. He was everything bad that happened to me. But he was the only time- other than dancing- that I felt alive, too.
Being with him was like dancing. Dancing with death.

This isn't a conventional love story. There are tough issues as well as concerns about consent. Damon is a deviant who inflicts pain and shame in an attempt to drown out his own pain. He doesn't connect with people in normal ways. Still, though, everything that happened between them needed to happen the way it did. This author does a great job of creating complicated characters that may change their ways, but still don't change who they really are. I’ve loved everyone of PD’s books save for one- which I still liked- but this particular world of characters has always been my favorite. This book definitely didn’t disappoint, and really, I could’ve read another 500 pages about them... which I hopefully will when Will’s story comes out. They’ve all grown into different people while still keeping what made their group dynamic so special. They’ve been criminals and victims, part of a team and lone wolves. They’ve fought together and against each other, but they are well on their way to achieving the kind of true happiness their fucked-up parents will never find. They’ve made small missteps and huge mistakes, but they’re cycle-breakers to the core, which isn’t something I ever imagined I would say about Damon. Then again, he just needed Winter by his side to finally fulfill his destiny. He might not deserve her, but she does deserve the person he is when he’s with her.

Maybe I didn't like being alone, and I wouldn't be if everyone else was as dirty as me.
