i was thinking about skipping this book… i wasn’t a fan of cassie and her story from the start of the series. i knew it was going to be a frustrating book and it was.

devin was obvious about his feelings for cassie for the whole series so it was surprising how none of his brothers saw it coming.

not going to rate it.

3.5 stars. I think this third one is my favorite of the series. It had some serious topics but was still full of romance, it was a pleasant read and heartfelt.

As the third book of the MacKade series, I wasn't disappointed. It handles the romance between Devin and Cassie in a satisfying way. Nora Roberts mixes love, history, life, and a little supernatural into this enjoyable read.

I've been waiting for Devin's story since we were first introduced to him in Rafe's book. Seriously swoon worthy. He was made even more swoon worthy by my favorite narrator, Luke Daniels. His voice is seriously dreamy. (I listened to the Audible Audiobook read by Luke Daniels)

The story itself was interesting. Devin has loved a woman he can't have for over 12 years. He's loved her through her getting married, watching painfully when he couldn't do anything to help her while she was beaten by her husband, and then having to further wait until she was ready to move on from her ordeal. Plus, he loves her two kids just as much as he loves her. Plus, her abusive husband is plotting to get out of jail, her emotionally abusive mother is trying to help him and Devin can't do anything about it. The entire book I had the strong urge to give the poor man a hug. He really needed one for a good chunk of the book, too.

Nora Roberts did a good job with the mental state of the kids and Cassie having come out of an abusive home and having started building a better one. I liked that Cassie didn't just heal up and move on in a paragraph or two. I like that she was a work in progress the entire book. I really do like heroines that are strong in their own way, that are a work in progress, that grow and make mistakes but aren't neatly tied up in a bow and perfect by the end of the book. Connor's relationship with Devin was great too. I liked Devin's character and how he was unapologetic about his personality. They've been building to the conflict in this book since the first one with Joe. It is sort of set up from the beginning that Joe will escape and confront Cassie and/or Devin. The ending really got to me. Connor and Emma talking to Devin after the big climax of the story had tears in my eyes. It was so sweet!

I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys [a:Nora Roberts|625|Nora Roberts|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1265820113p2/625.jpg]. Fans of men in uniform (Devin's the sheriff) romances and fans of sweet family romances will also enjoy this one. If you have trouble hearing about spousal abuse, rape and emotional manipulation, even though it happened in the past, you might want to skip this one. Also, while the sex is steamy and oh-so-sexy, those under 17 and those who don't like sexual situations in books, might want to steer clear as well.

I'm a bit apprehensive about starting Shane's story ([b:The Fall of Shane MacKade|396836|The Fall of Shane MacKade (The MacKade Brothers, #4)|Nora Roberts|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1381076632s/396836.jpg|1612544]), mostly because she hasn't really given us an insight into his personality other than "Womanizer." But, I can't wait to read it!

"Devin MacKade knew it was his destiny to serve and protect the small town of Antietam, Maryland. And he always suspected his future should have little Cassie Connor in it. After Cassie married the wrong man, Devin tried to convince himself there would be other women, other loves. Now, after Cassie’ s divorce, Devin can finally follow his heart. But can Cassie follow hers?" (From Amazon)

We are introduced to Devin and Cassie earlier in the series and can see the sparks between the two though Cassie is already married. Cassie's husband is not a nice man so you hope that Cassie will wake up and leave him. When she does finally get a divorce we root for Devin. I love these characters as they are realistic and heartwarming. I enjoy this series as we get to see characters grow and find love.

The Heart of Devin MacKade
4 Stars

Devin Mackade has been in love with Cassie Dolin ever since he can remember, but the timing has never been right for them. Now that her abusive husband is behind bars and Cassie is discovering her inner strength, the opportunity for the romance that alluded them is finally presented. Can Devin and Cassie overcome their reticence to be together?

Devin is the most patient and caring of the MacKade brothers, and Cassie is a sweetheart. While it is impossible not to root for their well-deserved happiness, their romance falls short precisely due to the nature of their characters. Devin is far too self-possessed and accommodating in his interactions with Cassie, and she is too timid and apprehensive around him. Consequently, it is difficult to suspend disbelief and accept Devin's eventual demands for more and Cassie's sudden willingness to fight for what she wants.

The minor suspense plot does ratchet up the tension and the inclusion of more details concerning the ghosts is intriguing.

In sum, a heartwarming romance, but my preference is for heroines with more backbone and heroes with more daring. Shane's book is next and it will be interesting to meet the heroine who can put an end to his womanizing ways.
