This book was just not for me personally and so perhaps one of the reasons why I had such a middle-rating review. However, it did touch on a lot of important themes surrounding race in America and the extent white women go to to appear as an ally when it is just a blatant expression of white saviourism and I liked reading about that dynamic between the characters.

Overall though, I had much higher expectations from the plot (perhaps influenced by bookstagram) and so just felt a little let down.

The middle third meanders a bit, but for the most part this book is strong. I love Emira and her relationship with Briar. Her mid-twenties "all of my friends are leaving me behind in terms of their accomplishments versus mine" anxieties were very well done and relatable.

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Read is a book that I’ve literally seen everywhere.⁣

This book touches a lot of complex issues. The characters and their interactions are also layered and complex.⁣

It highlights different forms of racism and how performative actions and activism can be detrimental. It brings up lots of discussion and reflection such as white feminism versus intersectional feminism, White savior complex, privacy, consent and unconscious bias.⁣

All of these themes and the constant micro aggressions throughout the book SHOULD make you uncomfortable and make you reflect, although it is at times, disturbing to read.⁣

Despite the heavy topics, it is a very easy book to read and very enjoyable.⁣

Definitely recommend this book.⁣
