I’ve been sitting here staring at the screen trying to figure out how to approach my review for awhile now. I think I am going to start out with saying this is not an easy book to read. If you read the warning in the blurb you get an idea of why.

I like dark books and this has got to be the darkest one I have read in awhile. I typically can fly through a darker book, outsider looking in, keeping my own emotions and things that I have gone through in my own life (nothing like what is in the book), what would typically be triggers for some people, separate from my thoughts while reading. I couldn’t do that with this one. It was hard.

Mr. X is an excellent book and definitely something I wouldn’t consider to be a romance, though there is love, a strange twisted love, but love none the less. I almost have to go into this as if I am reviewing a horror story, something that keeps me up at night and gives me nightmares, which minus the nightmares, I love horror stories.

I kept turning the pages to see why Mr. X was what he was, why he had the scar, why he was so fixated on Jay, what Jay’s memories of the past were, I wanted all the pieces to the puzzle.

I physically cringed, I winced, and during the strawberry scene, I thought I was going to get sick. Like I said, excellent book. Clarissa Wild definitely was able to work my emotions through her words, through these characters, through the entire story. During it all, I kept hoping someone in this book was going to get an HEA. I kind of realized my mind is a little twisted when I started having sympathy for Mr. X as more and more of his story came to light.

Clarissa pulls no punches and doesn’t mince words, she leaves nothing unsaid, and she will wring the emotions out of you whether you want to give them over or not.

Amazing, tough, gritty read. I’m really glad I got a chance to read it even if it made it hard for me to breathe at times.

Thank you so much for my copy of Mr. X.

There was a ton of hype surrounding the release of Mr. X and I had very high expectations for this book. In some ways in delivered, the story was unique and engaging and the characters each had certain qualities I liked but at the same time, there were things about the book that just didn't do it for me. The way the story was written made it difficult to really connect. I felt like I was 'reading' the story rather than experiencing it. Also, while there were some character aspects I liked, neither character had many redeeming qualities. You want to like Mr. X because his story is tragic and you want to fix him but he just keeps being a bastard and not in an out of love sort of way. Jay starts out as a stripper and drug addict who turns into X's personal captive and play thing. The story is dark and twisted and at times I'm engaged but I also found myself skimming a lot. The plot was somewhat predictable and the ending wasn't as satisfying as I would have hoped. If you're a fan of the dark side of lust mixed with hatred and revenge then this could be for you but I don't think it really did it for me this time around.

This isn't your typical romance... It's dark, raw, dirty, and I LOVED IT!!! Clarissa has a way with words that makes you feel exactly what the characters are feeling during each moment of a book, and this one wasn't any different! Mr. X has a very dark and damaged past, but Jay plays a huge role in unraveling his anger, sadness, and hatred. There is a lot of dark parts within this book so not everyone will be amped to read it, but it is so worth it!! I highly recommend Mr. X!!!

*I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

What really grabbed my attention at first was the synopsis. I love dark romances, so this one seemed like it had the potential to wow me. Unfortunately, the potential was there, but the story never reached that point where I connected to it or to the characters.

Jay is a drug addict and stripper that sells herself to the strip club's customers in order to get her next hit. What appeared to be just a routine night in a motel room with a customer suddenly takes a bad turn when she is face-to-face with a scarred stranger. With a gun pointed to her head, Jay has no choice but to obey his every command.

Mr. X was somewhat of a complex and interesting characters. He is definitely dark and twisted, and I from the get-go I wanted to find out what he wanted with Jay and why. Though it is assumed from the beginning that they have a shared past, but it isn't until later when it's all revealed.

The author had a very interesting plot to work with, but the end result just didn't work for me. I wanted more detail of some aspects of X's back story. I also found his reason for revenge a little lame since I thought the main character wasn't at fault for what happened to him. I also wanted to connect to Jay's character throughout the book, but because of her actions, it never happened.

Overall, I thought the idea of it was interesting. I liked the flashbacks and the fact that Mr. X was so ruthless. I also think that the overall problem I had was that I have read so many dark romances that I have really high-standards for them. If you like dark and twisted reads with an interesting plot, go for it! It made not have wow-ed me like I wanted, but it may be for you.

that was a ride for sure
stockholm syndrome, what is that?
just got an issue with the writing, like maybe we could have seen rather than heard all the progress made between them, no?
I'm still kinda stunned because this was not at all what i expected. crazy fucking ride.
