still trying to think about a coherent criticism on this book, but...goddamnit did I wanted to throw it as far as I could every fucking time I tried ready it!
This has a lot great information about relationships in general. I can see how some of this would be too "out there" for some, but it provides an interesting look at how people can function and work toward healthier and more fulfilling relationships in their lives. This book really got me questioning why I choose to do things according to tradition and what changes I may want to make in the future.
I debated whether or not to rate this book 3 or 4 stars. I think it was about a 3.5, and I usually round up, so I'll go with 4. Overall, I would recommend this book.
The Cons:
Even having been updated many times, it's a bit outdated.
There are some pretty serious stereotypes against monogamy and culture. And surprisingly, an assumption that we have all been affected by bad parenting.
There were several times that the authors would say, "If you want more information...research this..." I'm already reading a book to research something, I shouldn't have to go on a scavenger hunt. Just put in a brief synopsis of the information that you're trying to share.
Pros:
The chapter on jealousy was absolutely fantastic. Everyone, no matter what kind of relationship they are in, should read it.
I loved the personal anecdotes that the authors shared.
The exercises that they recommended for journaling and/or communication are thought provoking and worthwhile.
The general purpose of the book is to encourage excellent communication, learning to build boundaries, and a lot of self love and acceptance. No matter what one's relationship goals are, these are always good skills to put energy in to.
