I've heard Ada Limón's name thrown around for years and seen snippets of her poems, but this was my first time sitting down with a proper collection of hers. I read each poem out loud and enjoyed the general tone, as well as the book's organization by season.
One thing I've noticed about many of the poets that I've read is how they often use specific names for flora and fauna, which I have to look up while reading. I don't mind this at all. It's a great opportunity to learn about birds, flowers, and trees, and it makes sense that writers interested in nature are so familiar with it.
Overall, I like Ada Limón's style and her courage to write about subjects that poets often discourage people from addressing in their work, such as grandparents, for fear of being trite and cliché. Many of the poems in this collection moved me deeply, and I appreciate Limón's simplicity of language as well as her easy-to-follow formatting. If I were studying her poetry for a college class, there would be ample material to discuss in even her shortest works.

My favourite Limón collection so far, I think.

i don’t even know if i should call them voltas, but she has refined and arguably perfected the technique. every poem, i think i know where she’s going, until i don’t and i love where we ended up even more than i what i was expecting.
every poem contains multiple stories that converge and dance until you are left with a lesson. not heavy handed, but a clear statement about how she regards and considers the world. and i love what her noticings and questions make me consider about the world and my regard of it.

“I have always been too sensitive, a weeper / from a long line of weepers,” writes Limón. “I am the hurting kind.”
Hi, it is me, a born empath. I was swept away by this collection, by Limón’s melodic language, by nostalgia, by love, by life - by the desperation of being human.
