I was honestly a little disappointed by the book. I really enjoyed Evelyn and I felt like this one lacked some.of the morning intriguing puzzle aspects.

I was also extremely frustrated with the characters. Yes, lots of betrayal, etc but it felt like at the end of the book, Sara and Aren't just discarded their principles to save a friendship with the people who had just stabbed them in the back.

Complete nonsense, ridiculous ending and badly proofread to boot. (For example, 'effect' instead of 'affect'). I did enjoy the author's previous novel, but I honestly don't understand why the majority love this one so much, and I'm annoyed that I wasted so much time on it.

Stuart Turton does a great job at creating an atmosphere that is tense and fragile.  I spent the majority of my time reading this feeling like I was on tenterhooks, much like the characters. The plotting is clever and there were several plot twists I didn't see coming.  The characters and their relationships were interesting and the character development felt satisfying.  Overall a great read.

Better plotted than the author's prior story, the 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle or something similar to that, but this still got overly complicated at the end. Similar to the earlier story, this author knows how to set a mood and sustain a creepy vibe, so that works well. Tying it all up in a package that makes sense at the end is better, but still not 100% there yet for me.

This was a fun follow-up to [b:The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle|36337550|The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle|Stuart Turton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1506896221l/36337550._SY75_.jpg|57528323], though it takes quite a bit more to get into than Turton's debut. Like Evelyn Hardcastle, this novel also features a small cast in a locked-room mystery—but this time, we are on a boat. I did find guess at some parts of it, and some parts were a bit disingenuous to the spirit of a mystery novel (imo) but overall had fun. Just wish there were less mentions of shitting. Like. Zero mentions, honestly. Why did I need to read about it even once, let alone multiple times.

A fun time, but strange end ?

murder driven by demon possession on a trading ship in the 1600’s—what’s not to like?! I really wanted to read this with the intention of picking up on clues and trying to puzzle out the ending on my own. I think it really helped me stay engaged, because I felt like I was partners with Sara, Arent, and the rest of this cast of characters as they tried to solve this mystery. Old Tom is wreaking havoc on the passengers of this ship, and somehow everyone has a connection to this devil. I thought the pacing was great throughout, but the ending felt a little out of left field for me on this one. instead of closing up the loose connections that had been made throughout the story, the last 30 pages felt a lot like I was just being told the answers and that was a little disappointing. I thought I had some sense of what was going on and hoped that the twist would match my presumptions. instead, it felt like we went back through the plot and added in a lot of extra small details in order to make the reveal work. I really enjoyed the process of reading this, and I adore Stuart Turton’s ability to create such a large and complex cast of characters that are all vital to the story without it being overwhelming. I will continue to read what he releases—this just isn’t at the top of my favorites list.
