Book was set in the 1600s aboard the Saardam ship which is sailing from Batavia back to Amsterdam.Traveling is Aren’t Hayes with Samuel Pips a famous detective who for some reason is imprisoned on orders from the Governor Jan Haan. Also sailing is Sarah, Lia, Jan’s wife and daughter, his mistress Creesjie, a priest Sander and his ward Isabella and multiple crew members. Someone onboard has summoned a demon named “Old Tom” who has a past with Arent and his uncle Jan. There is also a “ghost ship” following them and every time they see its lantern, bad things happen. Sometimes book is slightly hard to follow maybe because of the language used. Not sure if it’s boating language of just 1600 century English. Also not entirely sure I understand the ending. In the end, there is no demon and it was just a fake show put on by Creesje and Samuel Pip who turns out is her brother to kill Jan. I did enjoy this book and it kept me guessing but the ending was a bit of a let down.

I was happy when it finaly finished. To many supposed twists. At the end, I found the characters borring. I really liked theb7 1/2 death... it was imaginative. There are a lot of better books out there than this one, with a better plot.
