A Sweet 'What If' Escape

"In the Unlikely Event" is exactly what I needed at the moment - a fluffy romance to get lost in. It was a quick read it took me just under three hours. It's definitely a lighthearted read that shouldn't be taken too seriously. I can see why the book has been somewhat polarising because the backdrop of war and politics is divisive and risky when it lacks nuance. However, I certainly wasn’t looking for a political commentary so for me it didn't detract too much from the central love story.

The characters aren't deeply developed, but that's okay. The book is about an instant connection and the lingering "what if" when life gets in the way. Exploring their traumas might have made it a heavier read, and I appreciated the focus on the romance.

The plot is predictable, with a single surprise at the end. The pacing felt just right for a quick, escapist read. Yarros' writing style is effortless, perfect for shutting out the world. It reminded me of classic Mills & Boon, but with less spice and thankfully, less cringeworthy terminology.

The theme of wanting to feel like a first choice really resonated with me. If you've ever lost someone because the timing was wrong and wondered "what if," this book delivers a sweet HEA.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a lighthearted beach read. Just don't expect a deeply complex story, and you'll enjoy the ride!
