3.5 Stars. I enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald and was happy to have another one of his books besides Gatsby. The character wasn't as relate-able but a lesson learned all the same. I think parts revealed human nature that we all experience at one point in our lives.
I had a real love/hate relationship with this book.
Amory Blaine is not the kind of character you want to follow in a story, and yet every once and a while Fitzgerald would hit you with his amazing imagery and sentences, making you wish that the whole story was that good.
I can definitely tell this was a debut. As much as I wanted to like this one, for most people I would recommend The Great Gatsby. It just has more, more of everything.

3.5. oh amory, you bored the hell out of me. I'm sad to say that this Fitzgerald didn't stick to my core the way the other writings of his have stuck to me. And I had high expectations for this too. but I will says Elanor, dear Eleanor, her little monologue about being a woman really picked it up for me and from the on the novel gradually increased in my favor but not so much that I'd recommend. who knows maybe it was the wrong time to read it and I'll change my mind later. either way, kind of a miss
"[A]t fifteen you had the radiance of early morning, at twenty you will begin to have the melancholy brilliance of the moon..."
Fitzgerald's mastery of language and ability to create beautiful phrases astounds me. It also doesn't help that he published this at the age of 23 and I couldn't even dream of writing this way at any point in my life.
More like 3.75 stars because the plot was bland and rather boring at times and Amory bothered me a lot (even though I do see a bit of myself in him), but a fantastic window into Fitzgerald's world.

Wonderfully written fragmentary novel by Fitzgerald. Amory, I don't know how I feel about you. You're kind of a punk.
all my notes on my kindle on this book are basically just me making gagging noises whenever amory opens his mouth lmao
basically: fitzgerald documented the first fuckboy™

So much of it is now a record of a past time and place in high society. Interesting to wonder how differently it would have felt to have read when that time and place was a shared experience and not a historical curiosity.
It’s interesting to read Fitzgerald’s first book as you can both understand his earlier like and experience but to also see him developing as a writer. It was enjoyable and worth reading.
