I love this book, the mix between all the normal day-to-day problems and magic is amazing. Even the dark problems are written in a integrated way.

Love Nell and Todd. Great start to a series with the world and character building. Even though I’ve read the series before, reading this one made me want to go back and reread the whole series

This is interesting. I see I rated this book (don't remember when) three stars. Today, I'm giving it five. I don't even recall reading it prior. lol But maybe I wasn't in a good reading mood when I first read it because this time around I adored it. It sucked me in from page one and I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

I first read this book aaaaages ago, in the days when I read whatever I could get my hands on, I didn’t yet run a book blog or take part in our online book community and I hadn’t read as many books as I have now. My general memory is that I did like this story on the whole, not for the romance but for the story and magic of the island and its lore.

Rereading this one now was an interesting experience. On the one hand, the book itself is very readable, has a cozy coastal island community vibe and includes some intriguing allusions to magic and curses. On the other hand, the execution of the plot and romance is very simply just alright, if a little too fast for my liking. It was still, on the whole, enjoyable, but sadly, I don’t think my strong positive feelings survive past my own nostalgia.

Pros:

This is one of my comfort reads, a book I go back to time and again because the story is familiar and well done.

It is really beautiful to see Nell develop and grow through the book.  She starts off so frightened and alone but manages to open herself, take risks, find her family and place.

Cons:

I am never a huge fan of the miscommunication trope but I think it is properly used here.  Nell keeping secrets isn’t an attempt to cause problems or hide them.  It is a learned defense mechanism she has to work to stop which is much easier said than done.
