This was much too long and not captivating as I had hoped. I wanted to sink my teeth into a tome and be immersed but this did not do it for me.
I knew some of the twists from the start, right after the prologue. Jess seemed so obtuse that it was hard for me to believe she was an investigative journalist. And the book within the book basically told us everything that happened that fateful morning but how could the author have known so much if everyone was dead? 2.5⭐️ because the ending was good but not a book I would ever recommend.

I wouldn't say I "loved," it .... but as is usual with Kate books, I was drawn well into it. I suspect the story will stay with me a long while. This one feels more tragic than other Kate books, and I don't know if that's due to my own childless melancholia or simply because it's set in relatively recent times. I would nonetheless recommend it, just not as an introduction to Kate Morton.

There is a discussion of "mind's eye," in the book which struck me differently than it would have before understanding I had a faulty one. I recently discovered my lifelong disinterest in description stems from a quantitatively rare condition called aphantasia. So I'm not sure if there is a lot of visual imagery in this book, or if I just took more notice of it now understanding that other readers actually see the events unfold. This tale is such that I'm glad I'll just be haunted by it in words, and not pictures.

Morton’s books have such transportive qualities, making you truly feel the story. While this wasn’t my absolute favorite of hers, no one weaves such rich character development and mysterious plot lines together quite like her.

A long and laborious read.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you like a ton of unnecessary details about the way the wind blows or how the flowers look in the garden.  It was also fairly predictable.  I figured out the main mystery pretty early in the book.

Hard to follow timelines and just what is happening/who are we referring to and when in the timeline/and a bunch of other stuff - very confusing
