“Who are you to accuse me of desecrating a corpse? And it’s not reanimating. The person is gone - what’s left is merely a plant pot.”

A queer retelling of Frankenstein where the monster is made of plants and mushrooms? Sign me up! Or so I thought until I started this absolute turd of a book. The writing was nonsensical and disjointed and overall just boring. I couldn’t keep Gregor and Simon straight as there was next to no character development. The only chapters I enjoyed were Jenny’s, and even so I only liked the marginally better than the other chapters. The only thing I will remember about this book is the sex scene between human and plant because how could I not with such descriptions as “mossy cl*toris - misty wet and all encompassing.” And wondering if there are blood on the thorns that touched your nether regions 💀

The only good part about this book was the descriptions of the greenhouse they lived in. It sounded like a truly magical place that I would have loved to be able to visit. All the thumbs down for this book.

Liked the concept and th3 beginning of the book, but it took a turn somewhere in the middle.

I wanted to love this book and the premise is there but it really fell flat for me in that the use of women’s bodies as props is never really addressed? I know it’s a horror book, but it felt very close to gay men’s misogyny at the club, groping women, and I couldn’t connect with it. On the one hand, I think it succeeded at being a horror novel in the sense that I was discomfitted through most of reading it. On the other, I’ve read horror books this year where women’s bodily autonomy is taken away and I couldn’t connect still feel with even the villainous characters.

I had high hopes for this book and it didn't deliver. Conceptually, absolutely fantastic; executed, ehhh.

I also don't recommend the audiobook. The narration would be fine if Shah were just a bit better with voices. Somehow, both his men and women sound absolutely tragic.

Somewhat disjointed- elements were good, but the pacing was off

To the outside world, excentric Victorian gentlemen Gregor and Simon live as bachelors in a lush greenhouse in the countryside. Inside, Gregor works with his plants and Simon works with his taxidermy and they live in what could be considered romantic bliss – or at least contentment. That is, until one of Gregor’s botanical experiments starts to think for itself. In this novel inspired by Frankenstein, Gregor and Simon experience the joys and pitfalls of unexpected fatherhood and find that they may have overestimated their parenting abilities. With the addition of a housekeeper in local teen Jennifer will their little family be stable?

I came into this book expecting Victorian gentlemen who make bad decisions and I was entertained. If you go into this book expecting literary fiction you will likely be disappointed.
