Couldn't be bothered. Didn't hold my interest enough. Also, a friend mentioned that the body horror was bad and I can't handle body horror.

A historical horror story. The horror element took a turn I wasn't expecting. The ending felt like a twisted sort of happier ending with a peacefulness to it. This ending did catch me by surprise. I did enjoy the LGBTQIA+ relationships, that was a very happy surrpise of the story. Overall a good srory that caught me by surprise.
Boring voice acting, plot could have been promising but I cba
i liked this book, but at the same time it feels as though for each thing i enjoyed about it, there was something else that i didn't like as much. i really like the concept, and i love the themes that were explored in this book. the ethical quandaries of creating life, a la frankenstein. parenthood, particularly what it means to be in a gay relationship and still somehow become parents when you had never expected to (this moved me quite a bit actually). individual and familial responsibility. pride, scientific discovery, life and death and the circle of life. plus i listened to this on audiobook and the narrator was great. he did distinct voices and accents for each character which, on top of being a joy to listen to, really helped distinguish the characters.
i also just loved that all our main characters were queer. reading about gay people in the 1800s, that's fucking awesome. i love old crotchety gays lmfao!!! the fact that simon and gregor were middle aged and had been in a loving, passionate (if at times complicated) relationship for years, not to mention in the 19th century, AND living together in a greenhouse, AND having weird af livelihoods/interests that most people find off-putting, was so gratifying to me. also jennifer calling constance her best friend because they couldn't call each other lovers </3
unfortunately the experience of reading this book was a little all over the place for me. i found it hard to focus on for extended periods of time. it was slow going getting into it at the beginning, then the swing of the story picked up and i enjoyed listening, but by the end i almost struggled with wanting to pick it up. at times it felt like i was trudging through. the first time gregor used chloe to kill someone it felt thrilling and stressful, but then the narrative beats started to feel repetitive or less exciting, like the stakes were lower. it felt like things just weren't happening plot-wise even though there were indeed incidents and events on the paper. and the ending didn't feel very satisfying.
