I started reading this as a physical copy, read the first chapter, and I just can't get into the writing. I then thought I would give it a 2nd chance by also trying it on audiobook... holy hell, this book has one of the worst narrations I've ever listened to. I listened to chapter 2, and that's enough for me.

long live chloe and jennifer; it’s not the ending i imagined, but it’s almost the ending i wanted. it’s a more realistic result as opposed to my expectations

I loved the overall gothic atmosphere of this one. I always love seeing more autistic representation and here we are with Simon, who’s an older queer autistic lead character 🙏 I love how each of the POVs flow so seamlessly together in the narrative!

Simon, Jenny, and Chloe were so endearing to me. They really made this arrangement feel like a true family 🥹 Gregor on the other hand…I have fighting words for him 😅 I know without him and his botany knowledge, Chloe wouldn’t have been able to exist, but the longer I read this, the more I hated him. They deserve a better husband/father 😤 That being said, I do not like the ending. As for why, that would be MAJOR spoilers like
what do you mean Gregor just gets away with EVERYTHING?!!! He gets everything he wants with absolutely no consequences????? And sure Simon thinks he’s free and finally thinking for himself but he’s actually even MORE infatuated with Gregor and doing everything he requests of him without a thought??? And while it is sweet that Jennifer and Constance/Chloe are technically together forever….Jennifer still dies 😭😭😭

I know this is too hopeful but I wish Simon, Jennifer, and Chloe could’ve ran away from Gregor, he’s such a manipulative asshole.

Also I was lowkey expecting Will to also get himself involved with this family— especially once they revealed that part of the mycelium still exists separate from Chloe, her “brother” they called it. Like maybe somehow Will could’ve stumbled upon it and be accidentally (or purposefully 👀) made into an actual “brother” for Chloe??? I don’t know, there was potential there that I feel was missed

So... The first half had me so bad! I loved the writing and all the plant talk ('cause I'm a plant mom ✌🏻). However, the character development was a bit strange. Gregor was tolerable in the first half and completely insufferable in the last portion of the book. Why Simon was with him still baffles me. I still don't understand the goal of
killing Mallory, if not for a petty grievance
. Also, CHLOE was kind of meh. For a plant-fungus creature I would think she would be more unhinged and she wasn't? The ending was also lackluster so, I don't know, this book was not what I was hoping for. The 3-star rating is purely for the concept, writing, and plant stuff.

This was impressively fun, playful, dark, beautiful. Who knew two gay dads and their plant daughter would heal me so.
