DID NOT FINISH: 20%

DNF at 20%. Dry and humorous and I can see where the “horror” might come in (I’d hope it’d be unexpected) but I’m not into it yet

Holy shit! I absolutely love this book! the Victorian gothicness. the queerness. the botany. the monster fucking. I feel like this book was made for me.

One small thing.... and I appreciate I am a sucker for a happy ending usually... but I would've liked more tragedy. I know what a shocker, me wanting more tragedy. I just feel like Gregor deserves a tragic death after everything he's done.

I completely demolished this book! I'm genuinely enjoying reading again and it's making me so happy!

While I enjoyed a lot of aspects of this book, I think what dragged it down for me was ironically enough Simon and Gregor. Specifically their character motivations, and particularly the way the pair seemed to trade motivations as the book went on. Simon in particular felt confused towards the last third of the book, but that may have also just been me, and my decision to read the book via both a physical copy and audio. I also think calling this a “horror” to me personally feels like a bit of a stretch. I don’t think including
murder
automatically makes a book a horror, and I think it was a lot more emotional and romantic at times than a typical horror tends to be.
