A fun fantasy book - love the *actual* enemies to lovers trope (not just we didn’t get along at first, or we’re rivals, but I’m here to destroy you and your kingdom). I got a little bored and mixed up with the political alliances and the complicated map (I wish there was a more detailed map of Ithicana at the front) but the action moves at a good pace and I liked the protagonists

Originally I was only going to give this book 4.5 stars because I found myself very confused in the first 30% or so with the descriptions of the bridge. I couldn’t comprehend how it worked at all. But by 50% that no longer mattered at all. Eventually I understood the bridge enough to not care, but I completely forgot I had trouble at all because everything else going on was so much more important. For 50% onwards I could not put it down. I read the entire second half in one sitting. The characters are always in some kind of danger, it’s constantly tense, I’m feeling a roller coaster of emotions. It has been so incredibly long since a book has made me so passionate that I wanted to peg it across the room almost constantly. And in a good way. I’m crying, screaming, throwing up constantly. This book took years off my life. I don’t think I’ll ever stop feeling anxious. Absolutely amazing. 100% recommend to ANYONE. Please read this I cannot stress this enough.

I was sitting on this one for quite a while so let me just make this easier for you... If you love Celaena, Aelin or any other strong minded female assasin girlie
that turns her life around and completely reevaluates everything because she's been lied to her whole life,
THIS IS YOUR SHIT. Lara is strong, sassy, witty beyond reason and all-around a tortured little soul 😇 You just gotta love her. There's a cute cat and a cute ass enemies to lovers love trope + the friendships/relationships formed are to die for! This book gives you a lot of surprises if you don't search things or read ahead (had to stop myself a couple times cause it was sooo good I needed to know more sooner XD). It's fast paced and the story just pulls you in. I know it's relative to give bonus points for but the world is absolutely gorgeous (if your brains work the fantasy part just like mine). There's 3 books rn, nothing too long... 4th one comes out 10.2033. READ, ENJOY!

It started out a little slow and I got lost with the descriptions of the bridge and the lay out in the beginning.

But towards the middle it really pulled through and the pace picked up. A very creative/original idea that was executed well. I want to read more from this writer now!

Loved Aren and Lara as characters, especially Aren. It seems incredibly difficult in the fantasy genre to write a self-assured confident man that is also humble and empathetic. Lara was written as a morally grey character but you still understood her motivations and she has a redeeming arc throughout.

The ending was bold and it was a risk, but I think it worked. It gave the necessary depth to the story and I'm excited for book 2.

The ending is a bit brutal and it does end on a cliffhanger.

The character writing(e.g. relationships, emotions: I wanted to see and feel rage) was a little bit lacking but the plot did capture me and by that I mean the last 11 pages convinced me to continue reading the series while during the former ~300 I was constantly contemplating to dnf.
(the only emotion I did feel was frustration, but if the frustrating part did not happen this would not be a series but a single standalone book)

I was hoping for more spice earlier on. This was more about adventurous sea fare. sex came around 82%.

I docked a whole star because the decision to not admit about the inked paper was a plot device. I lost faith in the author for creating a more textured plot.

I’ll continue with book two to resolve the cliffhanger ending. But I doubt this will be as spiced as like like

Amazing book, a fast read and interesting world building. The only reason I give it 4.75 instead of 5 is the ending on a cliffhanger.

As the first instalment in the series, this one obviously contained a lot of world building to set the scene. I felt this was really well done and easy to follow. It was a light, enjoyable and quick listen.

I’m a sucker for enemies to lovers, so I was rooting for our star crossed lovers from the get go! I’m also a sucker for a strong female lead, and Lara had that in spades! Witty, sarcastic, fierce and strong willed, yet willing to learn and own her mistakes.

Aren was a great counterpart for Lara; the strong silent type, listening and learning before acting.

This one was right up my street, and I’ve already started listening to book 2!
