It's Sleep No More as a book experience. My problem is the narrator is so slow to catch on to the premise, which might be realistic, but is also fucking boring. Also maybe I'm a mean asshole, but given how much the narrator forgot and therefore had to re-experience, he's stupid forgiving of what we're told are heinous crimes.
The main character is in his third host and it’s getting repetitive and I really don’t care enough to keep reading and find out what happens. Cutting my losses.
The narrator was a bit too self-pitying for me tbqh.
This book needed a good editor. I wanted to like this more than I did. Maybe looking back on it, I’ll be willing to give it more stars, but I had such high hopes and it felt a little ramble-y.
the ending was not what i was expecting and i left with more questions about how the world itself works (kinda like the giver) but i looooooved the mystery and the time loop aspect of it. the reread is gonna be fun now that i know what to look for

I read this book thinking it was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Kidding, I was actually duped into reading another one of Turton's books, The Devil and the Dark Water, back in 2021 and I enjoyed it enough to check out his first book.
The premise is what really stood out to me; eight bodies and eight days to solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle. I pictured a guy experiencing Deja Vu as he lived the same day over and over as other people while trying to solve a murder, and I was not disappointed to find that was the case. There are a lot of moving parts that always propose a question one day and get answered in the next or the next or the next, etc.
What I liked most about the story was that the main character would inhabit the bodies of some very unique characters and oftentimes struggle against their personalities as he tried to hold onto his own. It made for some interesting character moments that could either benefit or hinder his progress.
I told a friend the other day that my rating would be based on the ending and how they wrapped up the mystery. I said I'd give it 3 stars if it was bad, or 4 stars if I was satisfied. This wasn't really the kind of book with a mystery you could solve yourself if you were paying attention, so you really need the character to solve it in a way that doesn't seem like a stretch. There was one part that rubbed me the wrong way, but I decided the rest of the reveal was worth the read, so I'm going to give it 4 stars. Would recommend to people who like mind-bending thrillers.
