I enjoyed this book, however didn’t vibe with the writing style as much. Not my least favourite but not my first recommendation to friends either.
What a rollercoaster ride we went on. I laughed and cried. Its not something I normally read but I really enjoyed the journey. Brought back some emotions I thought I had quashed.
Such a lovely story of a girls journey through tough time and we think we have it bad in 2020.
Imagine losing everything you knew from the age of 13. Then trying to survive with no food, power the way it was described I could feel her hunger and pain.

I loved her "Think of Me" book more but this was also sweet. I read them out of order and almost glad I did.
I loved this story but 3 stars because I didn’t love the ending.

As someone says in a review below, this is really a holiday read, disguised as historical fiction.
Certainly, there is some good writing here - Liardet depicts the cold, shame and hunger of Ellen's early days most evocatively, as she does the general privations of the British war, and Ellen's enormous love for Pamela. However, the middle part of the book dragged a little as it headed to the finale that anyone could see coming.
Some gorgeous phrases here, but it all felt a little soapy in the end.
