This one sadly wasn’t it.
The story felt unfinished and the ending rushed. I really liked the characters in the beginning, but their relationships turned out to be pretty weird and I didn’t really care about them later anymore. The humor of Mhairis later works wasn’t as nicely worked out in this one either. It dragged a little.

The main character is just getting worse as it goes on. I was under the impression that the story would start after he'd separated from his wife. Nope. Girl is over here pining after a fully married man and hating on his wife because she enjoys good design taste. No thank you.

This was so cute! Rachel was hilarious and relatable. The author actually put thought into the content instead of solely relying on spice.

Ben and Rachel meet the day before uni. And they spend the next 3 years as best friends. Rachel has a boyfriend named Rhys back home and Ben is sort of a player and she never really thinks of him romantically. She adores him and he adores her. Rachel is also close with Caroline and Mindy and they have all the fun that university students should.
Fast forward 10 years. Rachel hasn’t seen Ben since graduation. She is calling off her engagement and relationship with Rhys after 13 years. She still spends time with Mindy and Caroline. And then Caroline says she saw Ben in town. He’s moved back. And Rachel is stunned. She’s never told anyone why they stopped talking.
This one was not bad, but may be my least favorite of McFarlane’s books. I found that I didn’t really like most of the characters. Yes, all humans are flawed, but I struggled to really embrace any of them. And while we got a happy ending, it wasn’t the one I would’ve wanted
I really enjoyed this book! The switching from present to past was a great way to exhibit Ben and Rachel’s closeness, similarities and history. It was between 4 and 5 stars for me so I have erred on 4, but really did enjoy this and will be buying for my bookcase (read on kindle)
