A brutally honest memoir by Keri Blakinger who was a former National skating star and an outstanding student at Cornell University. Keri writes in detail what derailed her and her pursuit of a skating career, and while drugs are obviously a major factor, it is not the only factor. Why? Because people with positive self images don't typically turn to a life of drugs.
Despite all the accoutrements of a successful life, Keri struggled with self esteem from an early age and when at 17 her skating partner left her, she floundered. That sense of unmooring left her shattered and alone and seeking solace, which she found in drugs. Comparisons to the bestselling book Orange is the New Black are valid, however this is is a memoir that stands on its own. Keri who is now a journalist/author who writes about mass incarceration, is passionate about the horrific treatment of those who are incarcerated in the U.S. Criminal Justice System. That passion shows in this book.
I have a feeling that this memoir will be made into a tv series/movie.

📚 Corrections In Ink by Keri Blakinger
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I do love a good memoir and Corrections In Ink kept me listening right up to the end. Keri Blakinger was a high achieving teen. Excelling in school and competing on the highest level in figure skating, all while quietly and then not so quietly self destructing. She hit her “rock bottom” when she arrested with 6 oz. of heroin while a student at Cornell. Her memoir is compelling, moving, and totally engaging. It will enrage you. After getting clean and getting out of prison, Blakinger has committed her life to working for prison reform and being the voice for the inmates who don’t have one. It was a great  listen.

Thanks to NetGalley for the audiobook ARC!

Corrections in Ink is a detailed description of what should happen in our prison system. Though not a perfect prisoner (because there is no such thing!), Keri Blakinger describes how she used her time in prison to genuinely rehabilitate herself. At the same time, her book contains its fair share of 'prison drama' a la Orange is the New Black.

I found Corrections in Ink to be a very enlightening and frank memoir, which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the genre.
