This is advertised as a memoir, but it’s really just some woman talking about what she’s learned through her own life and her “Knowing”. I couldn’t even finish it. It was so dull and repetitive. It was written as if she had discovered the answers to life, but really it’s just her droning on and on about random stuff. It was also all over the place. One minute she’s talking about a time when her oldest is 17 then she would bounce to a story when she was pregnant with her first son. I don’t know. I know a lot of people liked it, but I personally thought it was awful.

Similar vibe to Girl, Wash Your Face. A little preachy at times with a sprinkling of interesting perspective.

4.5 // This book was perfection. I honestly don't gravitate towards memoirs very often, but I had seen this floating around bookstagram and I decided to give it a try without really knowing about what to expect. Oh was it so worth it.

I do want to give a quick content warning for mentions of mental illness, eating disorders, divorce, and alcoholism.

Besides the fact that the writing and the overall message that was being given by this book is something I could very easily get behind, an aspect I truly respected was how well the author handled writing about the many triggering topics she would sometimes delve into. Not once did I find she was glorifying any of her hardships. She made sure to of course acknowledge her past, but not make it the center of the book. She rather made it about how she has improved and gotten to that happy place she is. The writing is down to earth whilst utilizing beautiful metaphors all throughout which I appreciate as a literary element junky.

Overall I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, especially females in particular of all ages. It is uplifting, wholesome, and an absolute joy to get through.

Not terrible, not amazing. I didn't know anything about Glennon Doyle before reading this, so I found her perspective as a motivational speaker unique. I liked how she was open about her journey from being a "perfect" Christian woman (to the point that her previous book was about how to be the "perfect" Christian woman) to a fully out lesbian, activist, and feminist.

The messaging itself did get a bit repetitive, which I think comes from Glennon's motivational background; it felt like a bunch of mini-presentations about the same theme. Which was fine, just did get a bit repetitive near the end. Sometimes the messaging came across as "guru-ish" which put me off a bit. The humor was a little bit millennial to me but whatever.

I think this has a lot of useful messaging for women of any age, especially women dealing with life changes or struggling to come to terms with their true selves. Glennon touches on a lot of different topics with the running theme of accepting and unleashing your true self, outside of the constraints and boxes imposed upon us by society, religion, family, tradition, etc. Although Glennon is an activist, the memoir does skew toward the experience of a white woman (obviously) which may not be relatable to non-white women. I think it would resonate really well with white women struggling with holding their identity alongside their Christian faith.
