This absolutely enchanted me as a child, and it was still diverting (although obviously the society depicted was impractical!) as an adult—with the first example of co-housing I'd ever read about. I remember being saddened that we didn't have time to explore the entire alphabet and see what kind of cuisine would be served.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!

This was a pretty good read. I loved the interest in ballooning that everyone had. The story does start a little slow, but once the meat of the tale begins, it is very creative and interesting.

Professor Sherman's balloon crashes on Krakatoa, and there he meets people who live on the island, living easy, creative lives. And enjoying a huge diamond mine. ;) but we all know how Krakatoa ended up, so this story explains how all those families escaped the eruption.

It was an interesting read recommended by my mother-in-law who loved this book in her youth. :)

This book was fine, I just didn't particularly like it. I really don't care that much about balloons, so when this book was called that, I just went with it because it was a school book, and I can't say no to one of those. Some parts were interesting but others, not so much. I hope whoever reads this book finds it better than I did.

I really liked the inventions in this book. It didn't leave anything to wonder about, it explained everything and gave detailed sketches of what it looked like. My favorite part is when the Professor goes to Mr.M's house and gets to see all the inventions. It's descriptive and cute but it was missing a wow factor, I felt like everything was predictable or maybe that's because I've read it before.

A classic

I first read this as a child and loved it. I’ve read it every couple of years since and I still love it. It’s excellent for young kids and tweens.
