I love historical fiction from WWII, but this one did not grab me as much as others had. The story just wasn't compelling and didn't seem to have a purpose to it. The book was fine, but not one I would highly recommend.

Everyone is imperfect in their own way. It is how they work with their imperfections that give them life

wow. what an amazing book. The characters felt real, fully developed, flaws and all. A compelling story of WWII Germany, the large ugliness, and acts of kindness and generosity.

For some reason this book did not grab my attention the way I thought it would. Not sure I'd recommend it. I did learn a lot about the German Resistance, which I hadn't know much about before, so reading the book wasn't entirely pointless. But I wouldn't say I loved it.

I started this book this morning, and finished it in one day. I couldn't put it down. It's equal parts sad, mesmerizing, and compelling. A reminder that not everything is black and white, but also a call to arms in our uncertain times. I found myself wondering if this was really a work of fiction, or if I could go look up the characters and read more about their lives. Jessica Shattuck has created such vivid, deep characters that make you question everything you think you know about the Nazis. Highly recommended, particularly for anyone interested in WWII.

After the 50% mark I called it quits - I found myself ambivalent about everything - characters, plot, structure... Ambivalence is worse to me than disliking a particular aspect. I'd rather read something in which I dislike a character, or find the plot annoying than to just be 'why am I reading this?'...

I know I'm in the minority, but the characters and story didn't engage me at any level.

While I liked the story, I struggled with connecting to any of the characters.

This was a different view of WWII...a story about women who's husbands made a (failed) assassination attempt on Hitler (and the repercussions of that)

It was a good story. Not great, haven't had a great book in a few months.

Well written, although some of the character development was a little shallow. Did not like it as much as The Nightengale.

3.5, slow start but Part 2 to the end much more interesting than the beginning.
