This was a 2.5 star read for me. This book is about three women whose lives are intersected by WW2, how they survive both during and after the war, and how this affects their lives. While the book held my attention and gave me a different perspective of those in the Nazi party that realized the fault(s) in the plan, I though it took a while to get to the point.
The lives of three women are drawn together due to their husbands' participation in the plot to assassinate Hitler. Each one has a story to tell of survival during the waning days of Hitler's reign and the Russian occupation of German-held lands. Each woman faced unimaginable challenges of survival for themselves and their children. A different perspective of this period. Well written.
Fascinating read -- truly reflects the gray of this world.
It is hard to believe that there is still unique ground to cover in stories about WWII, yet this book takes a perspective that I've never heard before. Shattuck focuses on the widows left behind in Germany after the war. Parts of this novel are really brutal so it isn't exactly a comfortable read, but it is moving and thought-provoking.
Wonderfully researched and intricately woven storytelling that demonstrates how we are products of our place, time, and circumstance. "There is so much gray between the black and the white...and this is where most of us live, trying -" "-trying, but so often failing, to bend toward the light."
Another very good read about the strong and resilient women of World War II
I wanted a lot more than I got from this book. Still, strong women and a period of history that fascinates me...
This is a very well-written piece of historical fiction. It details the lives of the widows of the men of the resistance, who had participated in a failed attempt to assassinate Hitler during WWII. It highlights the women's experiences, the horrors they endured, and how their lives turned out after the war. An excellent book, but hard to read at times due to the subject matter.
