was honestly going to give it four stars and then reading the author’s note at the end made me love it even more.
really great historical fiction read that shines a focus on the role women play in starting a revolution however big or small. the characters are complex, the storytelling is evocative, and the grim reality of this history is well-researched and delivered with honesty and care.

A fictionalized but well-researched account of one of the many labor struggles of the early 20th century, when workers were entirely expendable. This one was led by women, and I am from the region, so I found the story especially compelling, but the issues then were not so different from the issues now. Lots of food for thought in this book.

4.5. This account of the copper miners’ strike in Upper Michigan, and the role of women in it, is hard to put down. Once again, Mary Doria Russell’s writing is incredible.
This story was chock full of history. The copper industry was no different than any other company that mistreated its employees and made huge profits because of their poorly paid employees. This book lacked much of a background story for me. The fiction part didn't pull me as other historical fiction does. A good book, just not a favorite.
