Mary Doria Russell can deliver a gut-punch in prose like almost no one else. I think this has less character depth than the other books of hers I’ve read but overall the amount of research that goes into her work really shines. I’m going to be thinking about the watch at the end forever probably.

This was a really interesting read, and I'm glad I was able to pick it up from my library. So much happened in such a short time, and reading it through a fictional lens made it much more interesting. I absolutely loved all of the characters, and writing style.
I will say that I did not expect such violence, and would've liked a warning of some sort before reading, but otherwise, it was a very good book.

I really enjoyed this one! I grew up in Michigan and knew about some of the history behind this, but only a bare minimum. The story was well-written, descriptive but not so overdone that you get mired in pages of minutiae. The characters (based on real life characters, as I understand it from the author's notes) were all written believably. The history was well researched, and still presented in such a way that didn't come off dry or lecturing. Highly recommend this one.
This book was so moving and terribly sad. Not my normal read but I read it for book club. I loved that it took place in Michigan. Plus although this is a historical fiction I feel more informed about early history in Michigan.
I'm not surprised that I couldn't put down this book.
The amount of research behind Mary Doria Russell's storytelling is phenomenal, and makes the story and characters jump off the page!
This story is yet another testament to how women have made a (often invisible) tremendous impact in the world. It's also, though taking place in 1913-1914, very current in its portrayal of the haves versus the have-nots, aka the 1% vs the 99%.
