It feels like Biden just grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down next to you as he writes the hardships and tough decisions he and his family faced surrounding his son's passing. I could not put this down, despite having to stop reading a few times from crying so hard. It was surprisingly personal and human from a politician, but that fits with Biden's character perfectly. I went through a mountain of tissues and cursed myself for having put on mascara but it was absolutely worth the emotional journey. I'd recommend this to everyone.
So glad I purchased the audiobook. It was great to hear the story from Biden himself. Uplifting and heart wrenching.
✨More like a 3.5/5 but rounding to a 4
✨was expecting and wanted more introspection. the sections about the Biden family unit were the strongest. learning about what he was doing in his final years as VP tended to be interesting, but mostly outdated in 2024 as a lot of the countries and relationships he talked about were ruined between the years 2016-2020 and even throughout the 2020s into today. the world changes so fast.
✨like I said, the Biden-centric chapters/sections were the best. I think there’s a lot of tragedy surrounding the Biden family from early on that still continues to this day. It was so interesting to learn about their family traditions and the dynamics in the family. Hunter and Beau seemed to be thick as thieves and reading Hunter’s words that were spoken at Beau’s funeral broke me fr. I had to stop reading the book in the office and pick it back up when I got him.

The career part of this seemed like propaganda to me but I was really interested in the family portions.

Excellent insight into managing a family crisis while fulfilling duty to the nation and world.
Politics aside, this is an engaging biography of a life well lived no matter the challenges tossed in the path. There are repeated themes, many predictable (working class upbringing, Irish heritage, devotion to family). There also a casual tone that lets you imagine being this guy’s neighbor- and then you think “whoa- these are unique experiences!” Well worth the time to read or listen to learn from another’s life or to get a little insight into our next president.
Regardless of your politics, this is a great read, particularly with respect to his love for family.
This book was excellent and absolutely gut wrenching even though I knew what was going to happen. I definitely cried while reading this. I especially found the parts about Beau’s brother, Hunter to be so extremely sad.
The heart-wrenching personal story of Joe Biden and the loss of his son, Beau, to cancer. Biden walks readers through his family, this particular trial, moments of his service as Vice President, and provides an in-depth look at his very real, human, and humble heart in doing so. A good book from a good man who has experienced much both the lows and highs in life.
Moving and beautiful illustration of Joe Biden’s humanity toward the end of his VP term while confronting his son’s cancer and death.
