Inoffensive but unimaginative romance I picked up for a beach read. The beginning is full of contradictions, one line makes it seem like the original couple is perfect, the next says Sara has been unhappy for months. And the worst part,
after being left emotionally distraught and in a financially precarious business arrangement by the guy from the beginning of the book, she turns around and in half a summer agrees to become business partners AND marry Thomas? Nah

It was a cute, short and sweet read, but it did take me a while to warm up to the characters.

What appealed to me about this book was its setting in France. Every year we take our caravan, drive down to Hull for the overnight ferry to Belgium and spend two weeks in France & Belgium. We have never quite made it as far as Bordeaux but it is somewhere we would love to visit in the future.

The author herself moved to France a few years ago, and it is obvious from her writing that she loves living there for many different reasons.

When I think of Bordeaux I imagine chateaus, grand palaces, and a very relaxed lifestyle. What the author gives us is exactly that. When I read a book I want to imagine being where the author is describing, living the lives of the characters she shares with us. Through her descriptions within the pages of this book the author has achieved just that, transporting us to a place which sounds almost magical at times. She also allows us to share in the lives of Sara, Gavin et al.

The balance in the book between Sara's life and her occupation kept my attention, as did the various weddings which Sara hosts throughout.

This is a lovely read which would be ideal for anyone who likes a nice story with enough trials and tribulations to keep it interesting. I definitely recommend this one.

A contemporary romance set in the same chateau as Valpy's historical novels [b:The Beekeeper's Promise|38371397|The Beekeeper's Promise|Fiona Valpy|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1517914597l/38371397._SX50_.jpg|58359429] and [b:The Dressmaker's Gift|44285117|The Dressmaker's Gift|Fiona Valpy|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1565791024l/44285117._SX50_.jpg|68801023]. The main character's from those books appear as minor characters in this one. This is clear in the author's note at the end. You don't need to have read the others though I'm not thinking a reread might be quite satisfying.

Back to the main event ... The story is about going along with a plan proposed by a man you are in a relationship and then having to figure out whether that's what you really want once he's decided it's "too much commitment". There are strong themes around belonging and home, and how your desires are shaped by your childhood experiences but not determined by them.

I really enjoyed it and recommend it.

Audible review
Sara lives in a beautiful château in France, with her fiancé Gavin, organising weddings (to be held in the beautiful chateau naturally). Life is perfect until Gavin does the dirty with a wedding guest.

Far more chick-litty than I was expecting, after reading other books by Fiona Valpy.

Maybe this would have worked better as a read rather than audio, but I’m not convinced anything actually happened.

The narrator was good and it was easy to listen to, otherwise a bit of a dud for me.

It was a cute love and second chances story. I kinda zoned out at the end though. Maybe
