If you are a fan of historical fiction, especially in the early 20th century, this book should be on your "must read" list. Well written, grabs you from chapter one and doesn't let go.

For me this was a brilliant, well written, highly engrossing read, even with the length I could not stop reading and I admit to utter exhaustion by the end of the story. The characters were well developed and I've no doubt but the author spent countless hours doing research to bring to the readers a story of Russia during the time of the revolution. There are many intense moments, plenty of action, horrific details... gruesome at times so be prepared if you are faint hearted. We are well aware of the outcome to the story as the history has been written and almost 100 years have passed and yet we still hope. It is hard to discern the fiction from the non fiction in the story and it is one of the best stories I have ever read and would highly recommend it.

Koningsdag is koud en nat. Dus met dit boek begonnen. Geen spijt, pakt je meteen.
Boek inmiddels uitgelezen.

I was utterly hooked by this thriller. Like just about anyone, I have always had a passing fascination for the Romanov family and the mystery and intrigue that surrounded their end. Glenn Meade weaves quite a tale in this story of...
Spoileran attempt to rescue the family from the Reds and their intentions to murder them.

I love how Meade writes a mystery where the answer is not quite complete. The realism of the story, the human qualities of the characters, all made it seem like this conspiracy could have actually happened. It flits in and out of the mysterious fog that has always surrounded the family and it massacre.

I found was kept thoroughly intrigued throughout the book, and my only complaint would be for how long it took the characters to actually start off on their journey toward Yekaterinburg. The early parts seemed to drag along, only for the pace to quicken when the conspirators finally reached the city.

The mystery surrounding Anastasia Romanov and whether she survived the murder of her family or whether she died with them has puzzled people for nearly a century now. Though the mystery seems to have been solved with the recent discovery of two bodies near Yekaterinburg, it's as Meade pointed out in the final pages of the book - there is no complete certainty about it.

This book has it all. Romance, adventure, tragedy, good, evil. It's definitely for anyone who loves a good thriller, and for someone who enjoys historical fiction of this subject.

I think the author was going for sprawling and epic, and instead landed on unfocused and boring. Really disappointing.

B- Romanov murder conspiracy theory (too complicated), B+ novel.

Ein Buch das man ebenso schnell vergisst wie man es liest. das eizig Gute daran: es hat kein wirkliches Happy End, sondern viele und auch tragische Wirrungen!
