I took a long pause between finishing this book and writing my review of it. Breath by James Nestor has had a big impact on my life and my life’s work. Some of the ideas and practical applications of those ideas have changed my life and the lives and health of many others. I appreciate the tremendous amount of effort that went into writing this book. The ancient wisdom and the modern application of that wisdom are very valuable to humanity. However, I also have concerns that some readers may mistake the assertions in this book as science or as being backed up by science. Most of the studies cited in this book are too small to be scientifically significant. While I appreciate the author and his work, I also think that perhaps bringing in a collaborator or even simply a preface written by someone in the scientific or medical community would greatly enhance the impact of this book. Part of the reason that the studies are so small is because research funds tend to go toward projects that support the status quo and not toward projects that disrupt it. James Nestor has saved many lives with his techniques and I applaud him. The next step is finding ways to bring these ancient concepts into modern medicine in a way that everyone, not just folks on a Yogic path, can have access to them through their healthcare and allied health care professionals. The author’s narration performance is acceptable. However, I strongly believe that the impact of the work and the level of understanding achieved by the reader might have been greatly enhanced by having the narration by a professional actor instead. I would recommend this book to anyone who has issues with sleep especially and their loved ones and anyone who wants to gain more insight and control over their own health.

I have read this now and am already convinced that this is the correct way to breathe. Not just by hearing about his experiences, but also because the minute I close my mouth I thought, wow, this just feels right.

My holistic therapist tells me I don’t breathe enough and I suffer from panic attacks so I’m always looking to learn, and this book felt right. I found it fascinating. I have put into practice some of the things described and I feel more able to relax.

In a chatty, conversational style, James Nestor takes us on an exploration of breath. He touches on a little bit of everything - history, physiology, medical information (new and ancient), breath work methodology (which he tries, taking us on these experiments) and the necessity of breathing correctly. Which apparently, many many of us do not do. This book sent me down rabbit holes. I have started to learn more about the breath. I look at carbon dioxide in a completely different way. I am incorporating breath work into my daily life.

I like Nestor's writing style and plan on reading one of his other books on Freediving. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in enhancing health (which is my jam for 2023) outside of the realm of Western medical practice.

What a fascinating read! Wow, I had no idea breathing through your mouth instead of your nose could lead to so many problems. As someone with respiratory issues, reading this book gave me a lot of hope. I'm looking forward to practicing the breathing exercises at the end of the book!

DID NOT FINISH

Seems to be more speculative than scientific as I’d hoped.
