This was a good book, I am always amazed at how authors can create conflict from misunderstanding.

fun paced romance, but the typical English lady and lone Scotsman plot, if you like lots of conflict, peril, rescuing by morally grey persons you'll enjoy it.

Towards the end it finally got exciting, which bumped this up from 2 stars. The dialogue did not feel quite as authentic in comparison with other books I've read, which were set in the same time period.

This was a nice change in time period for me, though there wasn't much in the way of small details to make a strong difference.
slow-paced

Really repetitive, without any real chemistry between the two main love interests except for the fact that he keeps saving her.

What a disappointment. Although it has been 30ish years since Ms. Woodiwiss first published her seminal book, The Flame and the Flower, you can still feel the influences today when you pick up romance novels just published. Having heard about her recent passing, I was moved to go back and re-read her back list and even my jaded little I-hate-the-romance- novel-industry-and-their-hidebound-ways heart was wowed all over again by her. So when I got to this one, her newest book, it seemed so very out of kilter with the rest. There was none of the character, plot or relationship development that unfolds so organically and wonderfully in her previous books. There was a certain richness and depth that was severely lacking. Rather than feeling utterly satisfied and replete, I was left with a weird aftertaste.

Another book that ends with me thinking "Thank God it's over."

Annoying is pretty much the only way I can think to describe this book and everything about it. The characters are annoying. The conflict is annoying. The romance is annoying. EVERYTHING IS ANNOYING. I have never met a more obnoxious heroine than Abrielle, if heroine is what she could be called. There aren't enough characters allowed in this review to describe every bone-headed, hot-and-cold, back-and-forth, mixed signal nonsense featured in this novel. If I'd been responsible for writing this, it would have been a very short tale indeed because I'm barely halfway through the book before getting stuck on the repetitive thought of "Geez, Raven, just leave her alone." I could find no connection or sympathy for any of the characters featured, all of them prompting me to roll my eyes at one point or another. The only romance I found even the smallest inkling of interest in was that between Cedric and Cordelia- and even that I eventually found to be a contrived and awkward subplot inserted forcefully at the most random of occasions for... some purpose that I cannot even construe.

Long story short: would not recommend. Ever. Ugh.
