YIPPIEEEEE!! after an unintentional ~6 month hiatus (from reading in general...) i have conquered The Tome.

one of the greatest things i've ever read!! so much to chew on. made me laugh, made me cry.

finding out that dostoevsky planned on writing a sequel all about alyosha's life after the events of this book but died before he could... tragique. but good to know we have the same favorite karamazov brother.

Despite its reputation and its passages of philosophical brilliance, "Karamazov" did not resonate with me. I found it slow and filled with lengthy dialogue that was utterly unrealistic. Dostoyevsky is a master at his craft - there's no doubt about that - but his craft is the philosophic treatise, not the well-paced novel.

Had this book been a collection of essays, I would have embraced it. As it is, "The Brothers Karamazov" is too meditative and static to be an engaging novel.

A brilliant, profound piece of philosophical work. As much as it does explore religion and god, the closer I got to the end the more I felt like it was even more so about human nature – russian nature, the russian condition.
Maybe the point in my life at which I read The Brothers Karamazov enabled me to interact with this book the way I did. This novel is a lot to take in. It presents many different perspectives on life and death and god and justice, and not all of them are supposed to be agreed with. However, all of them are written in a way that at least makes you consider them: they are realistic, they make sense and you see where the characters are coming from.
I think The Brothers Karamazov is a book worth reading for anyone. However, I believe there is much less to take away from it without sufficient knowledge and/or interest in russian culture.
