I love this book, beautiful imagery and characters. Such a beautifully written book within a book
This story is gorgeous and engaging and makes you (as the reader) want to climb into the world and help January as she comes of age and finds herself. Even when you have to yell at her in your head (or out loud, no judgment from me) for being SO NAIVE, you root for her to grow.
I continue to love Harrow's writing style and ability to create a world just a LITTLE more magical than ours.
Great read for anyone who loves books and how they can help you escape, and who has ever wondered about the worlds that might be just beyond ours.

Once again, Alix E Harrow writing something that has entered my soul.
It was pretty good but it took me most of the book to feel connected to the characters and get behind the plot engine.
This book was not my taste all. And half of it was completely unnecessary. Like too many useless words kind of unnecessary. The protagonist/narrator could have been interesting and her journey in theory is a magical adventure, but god was this whole thing so boring. It would’ve been DNF if not for book club.

January was such a great character, very interesting to read and root for. Ultimately, I think the book was a little bit longer than it needed to be, with a few eye roll moments toward the end. But I was along for the ride and the questioning and the adventure of exploration.

There were moments where I just flew through this, and a few that dragged a bit, but it was always odd and intriguing and magical, and I lived the characters (especially Bad) and the worlds. Even when I sometimes wanted to shake January, she knew it and felt the sane way looking back, which I found hilarious. The book within a book (within another book?) was handled so well and really made it fun, too.
